I doubt the Seahawks would have discounted a team with a 1200 yard runner, a QB on a hot streak, and one of the best defenses (Porter, Hampton, Polamalu, etc.) in the NFL.

I purposely started the offending pair of sentences with "To me...". I'm not perfect, but neither is anyone here.

And we PURPOSELY quoted you to show you that you are wrong in believing that Seattle would underestimate the Steelers.

If you really want to play the "the steelers were a wildcard" team stuff then go ahead.

Sure the Steelers were a wildcard team, but EVERYONE knew they were the better team than Seattle. Seattle had a better record because they played in the NFC Worst, beat up on other weak NFC teams while Pittsburgh had arguably one of the toughest schedules in the NFL.

No one ever really looked at Pittsburgh as a 6th seed, while no one realy thought of Seattle as a #1 seed.

AznSAE 02-07-2006 12:16 AM

i see a resemblance of this game to the texas/usc game.

saetex 02-07-2006 12:24 AM

yeah, the Steelers won, but Seattle is the better team, by far. Roethlisbergers TD run was a joke, you could see the ball clearly, and it did not cross the line, terrible call, even with replay. His head got over, not the ball. Sure, Stevens shouldn't have dropped three passes, didn't help much. The push off in the endzone and the "block" by Hasselbeck were maybe two of the worst calls ive seen in football besides this year's OU Texas Tech game. Finally, the hold against the Sehawks was insane. My dad wsa an offensive lineman for the Eagles and he even said it was horrible. He usually doesn't talk about officiating because he hates how the game has become so soft.

oh well, steelers won, seattle lost, shit happens. i think im just mad because I lost a couple hundred on the game.

kddani 02-07-2006 07:34 AM

My personal top three obvious reasons why Seattle lost:
1) Poor clock management. Both at the end of the first half, when they had momentum and opportunity to score, and in the second half, when they used up all of their timeouts, leaving them with nothing when they had the ball and the chance to score. They needed a chance to compose themselves and figure out how to get two scores.
2) Missed field goals. Yeah, they were both 50+ yards, but the kicker has made a number of 50+. It's indoors, no wind. No one got a hand on the ball. Both had more than enough air behind them (hell, they had enough air to be 60 yards!), but neither was on target.
3) Seattle's not being able to complete the big pass in bounds. Had some great plays and great passes, but slightly overthrown and the inability of the receiver to get his feet in bounds.

I'm sure there are many others, but these are my top three most obvious :)

About Seattle being the better team- better teams get the job done, period. Better teams don't lose by 11 points. Both teams played ugly, both QBs played like crap. But the Steelers handled it and won. Seattle couldn't and didn't handle it, and did not get the job done.

To make excuses, to call your team the "better" team even though they lost, smacks of poor sportsmanship and sour grapes.

People, it is just a game. Chill with the nasty posts and attacking people.

And we're allowed to say why, "to us," we disagree with the statements.

Discussions like this go on all the time in sports.

I saw that - it was a good one too. I was thinking the same thing when Belicheck ended the segment with the cliche "the team that plays best will win the game." It was one of those "Come on, you have to have something better than that to say!" moments.

Go ahead, no one's stopping you. Just be sure to qualify it.

Bottom line and I'm out: At least I sent an email of congratulations to the Seahawks for a good season. I try to be a good sport because, again, don't get involved in a competition that you can't afford to lose. Don't like the outcome? PM me your address and I'll send you some cheese.

I totally missed him saying that and now I'm all upset about that! That must have been hilarious.

You are right. Also throw in poor coaching by that disgrace fo a Trojan alum Mike Holmgreen.

Oh. And throw in the fact that Pittsburgh had you cheering for them. You are like a lucky charm.

You're into genealogy, you're a member of DAR, you work with senior citizens, and you've been divorced a time or two.

I went into the DAR when I was 18, I've been around genealogy & genealogists since I was a baby, and I've only been divorced once (short marriage).

I'm currently wearing Reebok Cross-Trainers, and only recently quit playing competetive soccer.

I don't think that it is poor sportsmanship to say that a team that lost was still the better overall team. There have been many outstanding teams that have lost to lesser opponents. Its bad sportsmanship if you pull a Matt Leinart and and gloat about how you are still better than who you lost and that the game was a fluke. I watched three different shows onn ESPN and all of the football analysts said that the officials definitely affected the outcome of the game.

The only question of clock management was at the end of the first half when Seattle audibled twice and used up 22 seconds.

I haven't seen people here say that Seattle was the better overall team. I just read people saying that the better team lost. Were they better overall? I dont know. I don't know enough about Seattle, being that they play in an entirely different conference. But the NFL playoffs aren't the BCS (which certainly has many of it's own faults). That's why they're playoffs, and not bowl games.

Even if the officials did affect the outcome, again, two missed field goals, many dropped passes and out of bounds passes, and poor clock management. I disagree with you on the clock management, because I don't believe they made efficient use out of the second half 2 minute drill either. I also believe their use of timeouts during the second half was shortsighted in that they really needed them later on.

Both teams played ugly football. Both QBs were pretty crappy (I don't think i've heard one Pittsburgh fan say our QB played well... even the people who practically worship him). Both teams made a lot of mistakes.

It's a game. Someone has to win, that's the point of a game. It's fine to discuss and dissect, but i've seen a number of people, both here and elsewhere, get so personally offended and upset. If you have that much emotional attachment to a game, then perhaps it is best to stay out of discussions. (disclaimer: this is a general you, not directed towards any specific person).

Some people are taking this so personally. It is just a game. No one died because of it. It's not going to personally affect any of us in any significant way. There are much bigger things in the world to get worked up about.

I agree with pretty much all of your statements in this thread, except for the statement that Seattle was the better team in isolation.

For my money, Seattle is pretty much a poor man's Broncos (slightly better line, decidedly worse receivers) - but again, I won money Sunday, so I might be just as biased as you, but in the other direction. There's no doubt, however, that the Steelers did not play championship football on Sunday - it was a messy ass game, no doubt.

damasa 02-08-2006 02:34 AM

I think the Seattle uniforms need more Blue. MORE BLUE.

Seriously, a lot more Blue.

I hated the super bowl but I won money so I made out in the end.

33girl 02-08-2006 11:05 AM

This is a non game related question, sort of. Why was Seattle chosen to move to the NFC? I know they were AFC before realignment.
