For those who don't know, only the countries who medal can send three figure skaters; the rest can only send two.

Is this a new rule?

Yamaguchi and Kerrigan both received medals in 1992, but the USA only sent two skaters to the Olympics in 1994. I think the number of skaters was based on how a team performed in the previous World Championship. 1993 was not a good year for the USA.

According to the local news, Emily Hughes should arrive at the Olympics on Thursday.

I think the country's Olympic committee pays for their trip. I know they are the ones that furnish all of the clothing the athletes wear. (at least that is what I am to understand. May be different depending on the country.)

But...on the same lines...who pays to send the families over to be with their children? I am sure the friends pay their own ticket (I know that the speedskater up for 5 Olympic gold medals Chad H. - can't remember his last name for the life of me - has over twenty supporters in Torino to support him.

Did you see the "Today" show segment with Matt and Al trying the luge (only a short, couple of turns section) this morning? Yeah, looks like Matt drew small straw on that one.

yes i saw that one. the morning radio station i listen to says that the 2-man luge might be the gayest sport in the olympics second to male figure skating, lol. maybe if it was boy/girl combo it would look okay.

usa just won a medal in moguls. the word "moguls" remind me of the harry potter books even though they are no where close to each other in spelling or sound.

First, it's Sasha Cohen, and Kimmie Meissner. If you're going to argue about figure skating, get the names right first. Sasha Cohen is a beautiful and great skater - technically and artistically - but she lacks the "oomph" that Kristi Yamaguchi puts into a program.

Kimmie Meissner doesn't have a consistant triple axel, and although she's a hard worker, she's not scheduled to try one in the Olympics. It took a 3 1/2 rotation axel for her to take third in the Nationals - so how's she so much better prepared?

Emily Hughes is a wild card. Of course, she's good, or she wouldn't have made it as far as she did - but nobody knows much about her. She would have to land a triple-triple and have two of the cleanest skates of her life to even be in the Top Five. As I said before, that was determined weeks ago, and I guarantee you, Emily Hughes wasn't even on the Top Ten list. Sure, this will give her Olympic exposure, and maybe in four years, she'll be good - but it's set the USFSA back eight years.

What the hell does that have to do with Michelle Kwan making the team? Is Emily Hughes on of the top three skaters or not?

Kristy Yamaguchi is irrelevant. She's retired and she has a panface.

I must have some part of that rule wrong - maybe medal in two Olympics in a row? I know that medaling in one year affects how many a country can send to the next Olympics. So far, I've found:

1992
Kristi Yamaguchi (gold)
Nancy Kerrigan (bronze)

1994
Nancy Kerrigan (silver)
Tonya Harding

1998
Tara Lipinski (gold)
Michelle Kwan (silver)
Nicole Bobek

2002
Sarah Hughes (gold)
Michelle Kwan (bronze)
Sasha Cohen

2006
Sasha Cohen
Kimmie Meissner
Michelle Kwan (dropped, replaced by)
Emily Hughes

So, I was somewhat wrong. The USFSA rules are too long to read at work!

irishpipes 02-15-2006 06:18 PM

I thought it was based on your country's performance at the last World Championships and the number you send to worlds is based on the placement at the Olympics. I don't know that for sure though.

Thrillhouse 02-15-2006 06:33 PM

I was a bit surprised to see the US mens hockey team tie Latvia today. I wasn't expecting too much out of them this year but this still isn't a good way to start out winter games.

AFAIK, that is correct. It's all about placements at Worlds.

Ok, what the hell? We (Canada) win another medal today, but what is front and centre on the CBC Olympic site? Bertuzzi has had a lawsuit slapped against him by the Moores. Yes we knew that was coming, but why does it have to take away from the positive day Canada has had today in Italy.

  :(

I heard a similar description as told to me by a college instructor. It was for Vancouver but I will cite them along with Toronto equivalents (since I live/lived in both cities).

The Province = The Sun = Grade 5 reading level

The Vancouver Sun = The Toronto Star = Grade 10 reading level

The National Post = Grade 12 reading level

The Globe & Mail = University reading level

Are you criticizing the CBC site, or the Moores?

If you're criticizing the Moores...well, Bertuzzi did almost kill him, to be fair.

am I the only one who gets tired of seeing figuring skating all the time? It isnt so bad now that NBC has 4 channels covering the olympics and I am actually at home for most of the day and can watch the other sports, but like gymnastics in the summer olympics I think figure skating gets WAY TOO MUCH coverage and they ignore other sports, those athletes worked just as hard to be there why not show them as well

No, sorry!

Today was a virtual cornucopia of non-figure skating events. Curling, hockey, skiing, etc. More skating tomorrow though!

I beg to differ with you on the gymnastics...the coverage of gymnastics has gone down not only in amount but also in quality.

The media is being ridiculous with men's hockey. Did you listen to the guy at Gretzky's press conference? I can't remeber where he was from, but he asked Wayne if he felt bad for taking away the spotlight from Beckie Scott and Sarah Renner.

I was like WTF???!!! Gretzky isn't trying to take away the spotlight, you're putting him there by asking him these stupid questions.

Gretzky was quite tactful about it. He said yes he felt bad, etc etc.

bcdphie 02-16-2006 12:01 AM

Oh yeah - what's up with the hockey cheerleaders??? How very strange.

I don't think Frank and Gordon would agree with any of this :)...

The various European leagues make use of cheerleaders in their games... so I guess it was only natural that they'd make an appearance in Torino as well...

Oooh...I just checked online. Canada is one medal behind the USA. The USA better chop chop!! ;)

I think Norway usually does win the Winter Games for the most medals. They are just too strong of a power house in too many sports that Americans don't traditionally go for, like cross country skiing, ski jumping, etc. I think in cross country skiing alone, one skier can potentially win 8 medals or something like that (individual plus relays).

Someone go do research and find out for sure......

Seems like Norway has dominated the winter games over the course of history

Team USA and the Swedish Ladies are tied at 2 going into a sudden-death 10 minute overtime, and if needed, sudden death shootout for the right to advance to the Gold Medal Final.

USA! USA! USA!

docetboy 02-17-2006 02:24 PM

It's a shootout!

Edit: Sweden wins the 5 shot shootout 2-0. Sweden advances to Gold Medal game; USA will compete for Bronze vs loser of CAN-FIN.

I was at school all day (now I'm at work) so I haven't been watching the Olympics.

This is just shocking. I did not see this coming at all.

No offence to the US team because I'm sure they played their hardest, but I think their loss is a good sign for women's hockey. This says that the top team(s) can be beat and I think this can be motivation for the other countries to invest in their women's hockey programs.

And the same would apply if Canada lost/loses (although because I'm biased I am hoping they don't).

OMG...I just checked online, and in this brief moment in history, Canada has more medals than the USA! We have 11, they have 10. Mind you, they have lots of gold..we have too much bronze, but bronze is really just "tarnished gold", right? ;)

All I have to say is "don't showboat" and you might just win the gold you should have gotten.

Couldn't believe it when I saw it - I had to wait for the replay  Can't believe the chick blew a gold just trying to showboat at the end of the race...

Oh did anyone see the dude who forgot to lock his boots in practicing his ski jump? Freaky... what the hell do you do when you go into a jump and your skis just keep going?
