I'm sure that since Puck is a womanizer and the media portrays sororities in a certain light, the producers thought "Let's have Puck imply how easy it is to get with sorority women" (based on the stereotypes they have). And realized DZ rhymed plus is a saying that realistically some people have heard of. I don't think it is a slam to DZ in particular, but it does mean that the media still wants to play off of the "stereotypical sorority girl". The show makes fun of a lot of groups, it is meant to be taken lighthearted, but it still can be offensive to viewers.

Since people are so up in arms about Puck "bashing DZ". I guess we should be up in arms about CSI-Miami perpetuating the "horrors" of greek life.

If anyone watched last nights episode it was about a sorority members being killed, but in the flashback sequences you learn that the members humiliated the members by having them stand in front of the chapter (on a table no less) in skimpy clothing where the members told them what was wrong with their bodies.

Some might say "oh well CSI-Miami used a fake sorority", but if people are so up in arms over the comment that was made on another "fake" TV show, why be biased? Why not be up in arms over the stereotypes that CSI-Miami is throwing around?

The reality is they are BOTH T.V. shows and as another greekchatter pointed out until we as a whole change how greek life is perceived, these stereotypes are going to continue to be used in the media. Demanding that the media "show us respect" is retarded when we (greek life as whole) can't respect each other (other sororities, fraternities, our own members).

You can't demand respect, you earn respect. Unfortunately, greek life hasn't earned the respect because of the horrible things that we do that continue to make the news.

Yep.

I don't think it's quite that simple. Puck is a braggart when it comes to his womanizing, and the image is as important to him as the truth.

Puck is not a reliable source when it comes to his own conquests. Did he really do what he said, or is he puffing for the sake of his image? My bet is the latter. That's why I said early on that I think lines like this from Puck say a lot more about him than about the girls he's talking about.

Now, Puck may be playing off the "stereotypical sorority girl" image. But it's only a slam on DZ (or sorority girls in general) if you believe Puck is telling the truth, and given his character, the odds seem to be against that.

I've never gotten into Glee (no DVR and my own personal Glee - Charlotte Symphony Chorus - meets on Tuesdays) but all this talk about Puck reminds me that I saw the cutest version of Midsummer Night's Dream done by a local acting school. Puck was actually played by a girl, and she was awesome. Nick Bottom and the rest of the actors were played by girls who also played the fairies. The whole cast did a good job with the Shakespearen dialogue, except poor Oberon who got the hard stuff, but kept pronouncing the "h" in herb (like the male name instead of the plant). My kids loved it.

My first, last and only acting role was as "Tom Snout" in Midsummer Night's Dream. I still remember all 8 of my lines...

Any or all of these stereotypes which represent some (not all) Greeks, make the entire Greek community look bad, which I why I think it is unfair that DZ is singled out. Every organization has likely had a chapter that does not represent the org as best it could. These incidences lead to the rumors and stereotypes that hurt the Greek system as a whole. In a way, it is everyone's fault, but it is also the fault of the people (like Glee) perpetuating these rumors, making them more accessible. Or petty college kids saying dumb things. Etc. This bothers me especially because I feel like DZ is taking a big hit for everyone, and that isn't right.

It's only a big deal if you make it a big deal. I really don't think it's that big of a "hit". DZ will be okay if people just freaking move on from it.

A "big hit"?

Really.. it is a dumb TV show and it was a dumb line. No one, at least outside of GC where folks are figuratively pole vaulting over mouse turds, is the least bit concerned with, or really recall the character's line.

There are many things in this world to be upset about. This is not one of them.

I'd like to see people literally pole vaulting over mouse turds! Thanks for the visual, Kevin.

Exactly!

I see entire tv shows and movies talking about the "horrors" of Greek life. Hell, there's a Law & Order SVU episode where a pledge says that his brothers sodomized him with a paddle. That bothers no one, but one line in Glee makes people fly off the deep end. Am I missing something?

Precisely.

Psi U MC Vito 02-20-2012 06:43 PM

I think people are making much more of it because of the fact that an actual organization was mentioned. But honestly, one character repeating a commonly stereotype is no where near as bad as the shows and movies that actually depict greek life in a negative fashion, even if actual organizations are not being called out.

knight_shadow 02-20-2012 06:50 PM

^^ But, again, the only people who would've caught that are the people who realize it's BS. I doubt many non-Greeks even picked up on the reference. It only stood out to us because we're Greek.
