As for Panera, pay me little attention on that one. I have semi-irrational issues with Panera. And I also have a pet peeve (again, perhaps semi-irrational) about the current trend in many chain bakeries (Panera and Whole Foods come to mind) of making things like cookies and scones so big that I think they lose their character.

On top of that, I guess I'm a bit of a (semi-irrational) snob when it comes to shortbread -- I've been baking shortbread for over 30 years. I don't think I've ever had a store-bought shortbread, even one I liked, that I thought could compare to homemade, unless the store in question was a good, local bakery that made them fresh. Good shortbread is made with nothing but butter (real butter), flour and sugar, with maybe a touch of flavoring such as vanilla or almond extract or citrus zest. For that reason, I don't think one can get the right delicate consistency for shortbread from a pre-made dough that places like Panera pretty much have to use.

But hey -- pregnant lady gets to eat and enjoy whatever makes her happy!! :D

We want to try your shortbread. Samples, please.

As with cake and pastries, I have to really be in the mood for cookies. And I'm very picky about the ones I eat. Chocolate chip, snicker doodles, Oreos, and sugar cookies are pretty much it for me.

Damn skippy. Pregnant lady is uber pregnant right now, 34 weeks. Send shortbread recipe ASAP, por favor. One suitable for Christmas. :) (Does my comment about contractions make sense now?)

Get out of this thread. Now.

Although, I don't really care for cake, so to each their own.

Perfect sense. And I'm thinking now I did know at one time, but in my old(er) age had forgotten. :o

So as not to further aggravate Dr.Phil, I have posted the recipe in the recipe thread you started last year. Find it here.

DrPhil 12-13-2011 04:15 PM

LOL. Thanks for the recipe, Team Hard.

amIblue? 12-13-2011 06:37 PM

I want to incorporate the "Big Bang" thread into this one somehow.

I was thinking that too!!

I was going to say I'm team soft, but then I had store bought soft cookies today and they were AWFUL.

I will say, though, that an exception to this is the Lofthouse brand sugar cookies. (sorry if they've been mentioned already, just read quickly through the thread).

Look here, Team Soft Traitor, go sit with MysticCat and agzg. LOL.

I agree that some cookies are gross regardless.

lovespink88 12-13-2011 11:15 PM

^^^It was a huge disappointment. A chocolate chip cookie would have been much appreciated in that moment...and it was crap :(

Not all soft cookies are created equal.

Hey MysticCat - where's my shortbread?
