Gamma Phi Beta wazs founded November 11, 1874 at Syracuse University. Our Alpha chapter is still active there.
We were one of the original 7 NPC sororities. AND we were the first women's organization to be called a sorority!!! |

Kappa Alpha Theta "THE FIRST GREEK LETTER FRATERNITY FOR WOMEN" was founded in 1870 at Asberry college, now Depaul University in Indiana. My chapter is the centenial chapter or the 100 chapter founded in 1970.
Other women organizations were founded before us but they didn't use greek letters. We were the first and then others such as Phi Mu started using greek letters. The reason we are a Frat and not a sorority is because the word sorority had not been invented yet. |

Sigma Nu
My brother has posted our National founding.
My chatper of Sigma Nu, Delta Theta, was founded in 1891, at Lombard college, and went to Knox when Lombard went under in 1931/32. Our alpha chapter is no longer around, as VMI no longer allows GLO's, but our Headquarters is within walking distance of the school, and has a nice sense of history. And I'd like to say to all the Wonderful AXD's out there, I know some of your history as well, with my chapter :) Good luck to you all. M. Delta Theta chapter of Sigma Nu Knox College |

I'm a little late, but I haven't seen my Fraternity yet.
Alpha Tau Omega was born on September 11th, 1865, after the Civil War, by three young men at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. The Fraternity celebrates its 138th anniversary in two days! Tennessee Beta Tau was founded Feb. 28, 1894 at Union University, then named Southwest Baptist University, in Jackson, TN. If you want to get picky, we should be Tennessee Iota, which was founded Nov. 15, 1867 when Union was located in Murfreesboro, TN. Union University, in Murfreesboro, closed in 1873 and later merged with Southwest Baptist University in 1875. I assume we got a different chapter name because the university was called Southwest Baptist at the time. Oh well, it's still a part of our history. Jason |

Alpha Sigma Phi was founded at Yale College (now Yale University) on December 6, 1845. It was originally created as a sophomore class literary society (at the time, many fraternities were founded as literary societies). In 1847, the fraternity's publication, The Tomahawk was first publshed. In 1860, Delta chapter at Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio was founded as an all-class social fraternity. In 1864, Alpha Sigma Phi was suppressed by the Yale faculty, and for a brief time existed under the name Delta Beta Xi until it was finally shut down in 1872, leaving Delta at Marietta the only Alpha Sig chapter.
In 1907, members of the Yale Masonic Club contacted Delta Chapter and re-established Alpha at Yale. Since then over 60 chapters of the fraternity have been established nationwide. |

Check this out....
Alpha Sigma Tau was founded November 4th, 1899 in Ypsilanti, Michigan. They also announced the sorority to the school at chapel one day. However, check out this info:
The name Alpha Sigma Tau was chosen and purple and gold were chosen for the colors. Thus it was Alpha Sigma Tau, the third oldest educational sorority, was organized. A dozen or more very enthusiastic girls were present at this meeting. The next meeting was a little party at the home of Mrs. Depew on Forest Avenue where Helene and Adriance Rice, Eva O'Keefe and Harriet Mark roomed. The part was indeed gay and festive with decorations of gold and purple. Even the cake was golden with purple icing. Here it was decided that the next day should witness the introduction of a newly born sorority to the world at large and to the student body in particular. Accordingly the members attended chapel en masse, everyone wearing the chosen colors. Imagine their surprise and chagrin when the members of the Zeta Phi informed them that Alpha Sigma Tau had appropriated their colors. The group then chose emerald green and gold. WHOOPS!!!! I much prefer emerald and gold, though! Alpha Gamma chapter was chartered May 4th, 1946. |

Phi Kappa Psi
Phi Psi was founded on February 19th, 1852 by William Henry Letterman and Charles Page Thomas Moore.
These two gentlemen bonded while helping fellow students recover from a nasty typhoid fever outbreak in the Fall of 1850. This contagious outbreak was so bad that many students left school, and of those that remained, a quarter got sick and died. They risked their lives tending to the needs of their classmates. They eventually decided to found a fraternity based on the "great joy of serving others." Phi Kappa Psi would be the first fraternity founded neither as a literary society, nor in opposition to another fraternity. These higher ideals caused other fraternities to start calling us the "Noble Fraternity." Also, we were, by almost half a century, the first fraternity founded that is non-denominational and non-sectarian. We like to think that in our 152 years, we have helped young men emerge as men of excellence who go onto to better the world. The funeral of T. Woodrow Wilson, a chapter president while in college, featured one flower: the Sweet Pea, Phi Psi's flower during his college years. |
Kind of surprised this hasn't already been posted on this thread. And if it has, well, it's worth repeating.
