And what is higher? What is learning? What is...higher...learning?

What it is? I mean, what is it?

Versions of capitalism require some level of haves and have nots, so that is neither here nor there. But, had you seriously never heard of the initiatives under the war on poverty? I'm just trying to understand.

Oh, that part. Yes, that part was my sarcasm about the rich or poor comment. But the war on poverty, I seriously didn't know about.:o

I want to know what we are going to CALL this decade.

I was born in the sixties ('60s), graduated college in the eighties ('80s)...

The turn of the millenium or the turn of the century would be appropriate.

Okay.

Sidebar that has very little to do with cheerfulgreek: I think not knowing about some of the initiatives under previous administrations is why people are so excited about everything Obama is proposing. What? You wanna do away with the slums? No one has EVER tried that before!!! (ORLY?!)

I love this. This seriously makes so much sense.:)

That's what I call it when I have to call it anything. The 00s for short, but not pronounced like anything. Sorta like Prince's symbol.

MysticCat, if you ever knowingly and verbally called this decade "Aughties, the Noughties, the Naughty Aughties, or the Haughty Aughties" I think I might have to revoke your secret Senusret I's "cool older brother or very young father" card.

(I don't know/remember your real age so I can't tell which one you'd be.)

At any rate, stop the madness.

/obvious joke.

LOL

You guys.

This decade has been the worst of my life. It's been the most tumultuous news wise (Columbine, 9/11, Katrina, the fall of the auto industry) and the most difficult personally (the onset and diagnosis of Crohn's Disease, my mom's declining health and passing, the economy). It can end now, I'm more than ready. I'm trying to think of the good, because I tend to be a pretty optimistic person... changed careers, that was a good thing. Got divorced, that was a good thing too. Started grad school.. I think that's a good thing. Very, very tough decade overall though. It won't be looked back on with fondness.

I know taking away Columbine won't lighten your load much, but it was in 1999. I can think of other things to replace it, but I won't mention them!

Columbine was in Spring on '99.

(ETA: I just realized Vandal posted that right before I did lol)

This decade will be the first that I can actually remember, in it's entirety (I was 5 in '90, so I don't fully remember all of the 90s).

News wise of course there is:
9/11
Katrina
Bush elections
Obama's Election
the drug war that erupted across the border (here at least, it wasn't like that before)

Personally:
graduating HS
moving out on my own and gaining the independence I needed
joining Alpha Phi
graduating college
traveling
experiencing a hurricane (hey that's cool to a desert dwelling Texan lol)

that's all i can think of at the moment

Don't worry -- I've only used the Aughties a few times, and then I was beeing sarcastic. Very sarcastic. I've seen or heard all of these, though.

Hmmm....so much has happened in the last decade.

*I went from high school freshman to Master's student (and will have said Master's before the decade's over).
*There's been a lot of loss...my grandmother, grandfather, favorite uncle, great-aunt, great-uncle, favorite singer, and 4 pets all died in a very short space of time.
*I've also had a LOT of friends leave my life only to realize that weren't very good friends (but it still ripped me apart). I'm pretty okay with this decade leaving--it's been hell.

On the upside: I had my first boyfriend, first date, etc. Went on my first out-of-country vacation, my first cruise, first trip to NYC and other places I'd never been. I've had some good times. It wasn't all bad, I guess.
