Patty Celebrity 411 02/20/2006

Get your cup of coffee and enjoy......

Patty Jackson's 411 for the week of February 20th, 2006:

The Announcer proclaimed “The Queen” is back! As Whitney Houston took to the stage at the Winter Olympics, she was dressed in all white, and the audience waited anxiously as she stepped forward. When she started to sing, she started coughing and sniffling. She tried to laugh it off, but her voice wasn’t there. She waved her hands wildly proclaiming she doesn’t sing well outdoors. She struggled through her hits, The Greatest Love of All and I Will Always Love You. Bobby was there cheering her on. But, as she struggled to sing, you could see she was having a hard time. A lot of people didn’t think she would show up, but she is determined to get her career back on track. But, can she do it? Can she find her voice again, or has drugs ruined it?

In his forthcoming tell-all book, Producer Jermaine Dupri talks about Bow Wow and described him as a brat. It appears Jermaine was telling the truth. A few weeks ago, Bow Wow caught flak when he dissed Rapper/Actor Will Smith. Now Bow Wow is taking on Mr. Biggs. At a recent industry event, Bow Wow took it upon himself to taunt Ron Isley of The Isley Brothers, asking him how many hit songs did he have. I’m surprised Ron didn’t take his cane and bash him in the head. He probably wanted to, but Jermaine Dupri stepped in and pulled Bow Wow away. What’s up with young-in? How dare you compare your career with Ronald Isley? Can someone give Bow Wow a chill pill? I love him, but he appears to be out of control. Maybe he should take a music history course and learn how the old schoolers paved the way for him.

Is Eve dating a dictator’s son? The Philly born Rapper/Actress has a super rich boyfriend. Teodorin Nguema Obiang is 35 years-old, and his father is a dictator from West Africa. His dad is one of the top 10 dictators in the world. Teo showers Eve with money, jewelry and clothes. They have been dating for two years, and I hear he cheats on her regularly with Russian beauties. Sources say despite friends warnings, she looks the other way. I guess it’s all about the Benjamins.

Get well wishes go out to Singer Teddy Pendergrass, who has been ill, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who recently underwent partial knee replacement surgery.

What’s up with Terrence Howard and Queen Latifah? Absolutely nothing. She’s his manager, and she’s cheering him on in his bid for an Oscar. The Academy Awards are March 5th, and Howard has been nominated for Best Actor for his role in Hustle & Flow. A movie based on the life of Rick James is being talked about, and Howard may be offered the role.

Couples news!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Laila Ali has found love with Football Player Curtis Conway of the Chicago Bears. The boxer and the wide receiver have been dating since her divorce from Johnny McClain.

Lenny Kravitz and Tracey Edmonds? Lenny was spotted cuddling up to Babyface’s ex-wife despite the fact that she already has a man. Lenny could care less. If he wants you, he’s going to get you.

The Whispers are coming to town. They are touring in support of their new independent release, For Your Ears Only, and they will be at the Liacouras Center on April 15th.

Deborah King Lee, the daughter of Boxing Promoter Don King, has pleaded not guilty to drug possession. Deborah was recently arrested in Ohio and found with crack cocaine, plus pipes for smoking marijuana and crack. Deborah was also cited for driving without a valid license in her Cadillac Escalade.

Dave Chappelle’s new movie, Block Party, opens in theatres on March 3rd. Tickets are now on sale for Dave Chappelle at the Tower Theatre on Monday, February 27th.

The NAACP Image Awards air March 3rd on Fox. Susan Taylor from Essence magazine will be getting the President’s Award. Billy Dee Williams will be receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award and Carlos Santana will be inducted into The Hall of Fame. Cuba Gooding, Jr. is hosting the festivities.

Steve Harvey will be hosting BET’s Celebration of Gospel. The show airs on the 23rd, and features performances by Kirk Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Ty Tribbett, Mary Mary, Tyrese, Anthony Hamilton, Shirley Caesar and Dr. Bobby Jones. Speaking of Steve Harvey, his new movie, Don’t Trip.... He Ain’t Through With Me Yet, opens in theatres on March 17th.

Stephanie Mills is starring in the stage production, If This Hat Could Talk, based on the life of Civil Rights Pioneer Dr. Dorothy Height. The musical play kicks off March 7th at the Merriam Theatre.

The New Jacks will be in town Mother’s Day Weekend. It’s Guy, Blackstreet, Toni, Tone, Toni and After 7 on Saturday, May 13th at the Liacouras Center.

At the movies, Tyler Perry returns as “Madea” in Madea’s Family Reunion. The movie also stars Boris Kodjoe, Blair Underwood, Lynne Whitfield, Cicely Tyson and Maya Angelou. Tyler not only appears as “Madea,” but as “Uncle Joe” and “Cousin Brian.” This movie marks his big screen directorial debut.

After his surprise appearance at the Grammys, where is Sly Stone? He’s back home in Beverly Hills with his girlfriend and three kids. He is currently writing and recording songs for a new album.

Chilli from TLC wants everyone to know she was not stopped by cops and arrested for drugs in Atlanta. Usher’s ex says a false story was going around proclaiming this and it is not true. She has never been arrested.

Smokey Robinson is coming to Broadway for the musical Chicago. He will play the part of the lawyer “Billy Flynn.”

What do Martin Lawrence, John Travolta and Tim Allen have in common? They will be starring in the new comedy movie, Wild Hogs, about middle-aged bikers.

Was the marriage and children between Michael Jackson and Debbie Rowe an arranged deal? According to a judge, it was. And now, he is siding with Rowe in her bid to get her children back from Michael Jackson. When Rowe signed away her rights, did she understand what was happening? A judge has ruled there should be an independent investigation into what is in the best interests of the children, Prince and Paris. The kids are with their father out of the country, and being raised by their nanny, Grace. Rowe, who is Jewish, is afraid of Jackson’s involvement with Islamic culture.

Diana Ross has another Superstar in the making. First there was Rhonda, then Tracee. Now, get ready for Evan Ross. Evan’s dad is Diana’s late husband Arne Naess. Evan is set to make his big screen debut later this year in the movie ATL, with Rapper T.I.

What’s up with Rapper/Actor Mos Def. He has been ordered to pay his ex-wife $10 thousand a month for their daughters, ages 7 and 8. He is already behind in his payments, plus he has other kids to take care of. Despite the Emmy, Tony and Golden Globe nominations, he says he is having business problems. Mos Def’s new movie with Bruce Willis, 16 Blocks, opens in theatres soon.

Here’s a correction about last week’s Prince story. His new protégé is not related to Singer Toni Braxton. Ta’Mar appeared with Prince a few weeks ago on Saturday Night Live, and she was all that. Her real name is Ashley Tamar Davis, and she was recently signed to Universal/Motown. Her new album, Beautiful, Loved and Blessed, is coming out on May 2nd. She is also in the group Angaza. Special shout out to my West Coast readers for the correct info. I appreciate it, and I hope I get to interview her soon. Ta’Mar will be in Philadelphia with Prince on Wednesday, March 1st as he features her in concert at the Electric Factory Concert Hall.

The Senator’s wife is coming to the ER! Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, who recently married State Senator Vincent Hughes, is getting ready to film a two-episode storyline for NBC’s ER. Ernie Hudson will be joining her.

WHAT’S THE UNDERGROUND BUZZ?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This Oscar winning Actor can’t stop cheating on his wife. The wife is not very attractive, and all she does is stay home and watch the kids. He has been struggling with his career ever since he won his Academy Award. He has been in a number of flops. He’s a very talented guy, and his family is talented too. His brother acts and his father is a world renowned singer. How did he lose his “mojo,” and why can’t he stop cheating on his wife?

This Gospel Legend is getting no respect from her record label. Despite marrying into a gospel music dynasty and topping the charts with gospel classics, her record label treats her like she’s a has-been. She is seeing her career being eclipsed by younger female artists who have crossed over with their music and their talents. These women are having the career she wanted: the crossover hits, the acting roles, sold out concerts. Is it too late for her? Will her record company stand behind her and help her revive her career? She is one of the best known and loved Female Gospel Entertainers in the country.

Cuba Gooding. They did not have to call his wife ugly. That's mean.

Don't ask about BGA...

^^
I suspect that Mrs. Gooding's race (non-black) had something to do with that.

Neways, Soror Starruh blows up on a reporter from Dallas:

Life+Style Lead Story
Star crossed
By Daniel Kusner - Life+Styles Editor
Feb 16, 2006, 20:27

TV host-turned-relationship-advisor blows a fuse when questions arise regarding the ‘down low’ phenomenon and her husband’s sexual past

Star Jones writing a book about finding the ideal husband is like Anderson Cooper listing the best ways to score with hot chicks. Something just doesn’t sound right.

Star Jones added the last name Reynolds in 2004, exactly a year after she met Al Reynolds, a handsome Wall Street banker, eight years her junior. After a brief romance, Reynolds proposed to “The View” co-hostess during halftime at a Lakers game in February 2004. And that’s when the publicity machine kicked into gear.

Star and Al posed for countless couples portraits. They even launched a website that’s still up and running, StarandAl.com. But as the couple prepared for a lavish Manhattan wedding that rivaled the David Gest-Liza Minnelli nuptials, items about Al’s sexuality began appearing in gossip columns — all because Al once shared a house on Fire Island.

Then something weird happened.

Al hired publicist Cindi Berger and released a statement that said, “My fiancée and I have discussed all relevant parts of our personal histories. We are satisfied that we know everything we need to know about each other's pasts and are looking forward to our future together.”

The statement also requested that the media refrain from “destructive rumor, gossip or innuendo.”

Amid all the lawyerly jargon — “relevant parts” and “everything we need to know” — the statement had a “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain” quality to it, which only intensified speculation.

In October 2004, “The View” taped two episodes in Dallas. And while Star was in Big D, the New York Daily News reported that Al attended an all-male Halloween party at an Italian restaurant dressed as a stripper in a white Speedo. The costume was apparently a holdover from his 2003 summer spent on Fire Island.

If things didn’t already appear somewhat peculiar, on the eve of the big November wedding, it was reported that Al threw a “Roman baths”-themed bachelor party.

WHEN THE TROUBLE STARTED: In “Shine,” Star writes that as soon as she and Al vowed to be celibate until they were married, that’s when the mean-spirited attacks on the couple’s sexuality began.
Star grew up in the Miller Homes housing projects of Trenton N.J. And before her gig on “The View,” she attended law school at the University of Houston. Working for the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, Star was a successful prosecutor. While covering the OJ Simpson trial for “Inside Edition,” she caught Barbara Walters’ eye.

When she’s not fawning over celebrities on “The View,” Star asks tough questions and raises excellent points — especially in the often-heated “Hot Topics” segments that open every episode of the talk show. And during those segments, “The View” hostesses have discussed the “down low” phenomenon — a weak label that’s been attributed to closeted African-American men involved in heterosexual relationships who have sex with other men on the side.

The concept of “down low” is especially scary when conclusions are drawn about HIV infection and the alarming rates of African-American women who test positive.

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, HIV infection is the leading cause of death for African-American women ages 21-34. And the rate of AIDS diagnoses for African-American women is approximately 25 times the rate for white women, and four times the rate of Hispanic women.
Last month, Star released “Shine: A Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Journey to Finding Love” ($24.95, Collins). It’s supposed to trace her self-journey — how she lost 150 pounds in two years and how she “got the man.”

By avoiding being the poster girl for a particular weight-loss method, Star refuses to divulge how she slimmed down so miraculously fast. But when it comes to husband hunting, Star offers more than a few pointers.

She begins with the reproduction of a hand-written list: “The Ideal Man for Me!” Star created this list before she met Al, and she even showed it on-air on “The View.” Some prerequisite qualities for her husband-to-be included: Christian, college educated, no criminal background, Democrat and ready for marriage. Sexual history was noticeably absent from the list.

In “Shine,” Star also composed a seven-page test for readers to assess their own ideal man. Spirituality, physique, marital history, political affiliation, drug use and crime records are all fair criteria. But nowhere in her questionnaire does it assess having relationships with a bisexual or closeted man. So I thought I’d ask her about it.

Earlier this week, Star called the Dallas Voice offices.

Star Jones Reynolds: This is Star Jones calling, how are you?

Dallas Voice: I’m doing fine. And you?

I’m excellent. And any time I’m coming to Dallas, you know I’m excellent.
That’s right, you’re coming for a book signing. Everyone in Big D knows you’re our city’s biggest supporter on “The View.”

I’ve been talking about it constantly, haven’t I? Everyone picks on me. They’re like … [in a pinched nasally voice] ‘We already know how much you love Dallas.’ I’m like, “Don’t hate the player, baby, hate the game.” I love Dallas.

You said you and Al have seriously thought about settling down in Dallas in the future.

Well, I can’t put that on my husband. I’ve told him that’s where I want to be. He knows I’m very serious about it. Think about it: Dallas has everything I want. It’s got great churches, great fashion and great food. Any place that has Pappasito’s is going to make me very happy. It’s got politics, culture, Saks Fifth Ave. My girlfriends are there. And you’ve got a good basketball team, which means my life would be complete.

Your Dallas book signing coincides with Black History Month. And in February, issues that affect the African-American community become especially newsworthy. There’s one alarming statistic that particularly addresses African-American women, and that’s the rates of HIV/AIDS infections.
Definitely. You should know that I’ve been highly involved in the pandemic for many years. My first cousin died of AIDS — it’s now been 12 years. And I have been dedicated 100 percent, not just working at the foot of the legislation in theory, but with my own hands. I participate in an organization called God’s Love We Deliver, where we actually deliver meals to homebound AIDS and serious-illness patients. So that is definitely a part of my life and has been for many years.

Part of your book addresses your search for the perfect mate. Your book is like a useful guide — especially with all those self-assessment tests you created for readers. Recent statistics show that African-American women are testing positive for HIV at alarmingly higher rates compared to white women. In searching for the perfect mate, do you think women need to begin considering this phenomenon called “the down low?”
I have no idea what you’re talking about.

You’ve never heard of “the down low?” Wow, even Oprah has aired entire programs about it.
I know, but what does that have to do with me?

This goes back to the same themes your book addresses — women looking for the ideal mate. I was curious if you wanted to address these newsworthy statistics concerning African-American women and HIV infections.
From a newsworthy perspective? Because I was like … I was so completely lost as to where you were going.

From a newsworthy perspective, it’s not in “Shine.” It was not one of the issues that we address, obviously. The book was really less about “the man you wanted” and more about the person you wanted to be in order to get the man. Do you see what I’m saying? It’s much more of a self-assessment rather than sort of addressing social issues.

Don’t you think “the down low” is an important topic in 2006 — especially for African-American women who are searching for love?
But not in every book. You can’t address every issue. And that was not the issue I was addressing, obviously. Quite frankly, it was a journey I was taking to sort of better myself and to find out what it is I wanted in life. And I used it as a backdrop for other women. The book deals more with you identifying what’s going to make you happy and not a whole bunch of social issues. That might be another book, but it’s not this one.

Some folks are especially interested in your relationship with Al. During your whirlwind romance, he issued a carefully worded statement about both of your personal histories.
You know what, Daniel? I’m going be really honest with you. I’m trying really hard not to find offense in your questions, but I think you’re being really insulting to me and to my husband. And I think you’ll understand if I won’t allow that. I’m very protective of myself and my husband and our families and our friends. And I think it’s really not good journalism, and more importantly not fair for you to insinuate or in any way insult my marriage. It’s not fair.

What’s so insulting about asking about Al’s press release?
You’ll understand, Daniel, that I’m going to end this interview unless you’d like to talk about something else. This is not something I’m interested in discussing with you.

Right now this is probably the most glaringly obvious issue I can think of.
Well, it’s not glaringly obvious to me. And quite frankly, Daniel … Thank you, I appreciate your time. [And Star hung up].

Immediately after our brief conversation, two of Reynolds’ publicists called to ask about my line of questioning. They accused me of being a malicious gossipmonger. I explained that this was an opportunity for Star to discuss a serious issue facing the African-American community. And isn’t it strange that a confident woman who takes pride that she came from a low-income background, that she made it all the way to senior assistant district attorney in New York and who she calls herself “The Mouth from The South” is too sensitive to field questions about the “down low” phenomenon? While she encourages other single women to create their own The Ideal Man for Me lists, is it so unfair to ask if Star Jones had to address the “down low” topic herself?

Bow Wow, please sit down and tend to Ciara.

We didn't think about Teddy! That's who it probably is (from last week). :o

I figured that Chilli getting arrested was a rumor when I didn't even see it on the website listed.

The confusion on Prince's discovery has been solved. No contridiction.:D

Stephanie Mills as Soror Dorothy Height:D :D

On Cuba: It's good when you make movies like Jerry Magurie and Radio, but when you make movies like Snow Dogs and Boat Trip, that can ruin your credibitily. Jamie, take note.

Other Underground Buzz: Vicki Winans. Couldn't Mario hook her up?

Starrrrr: I just don't know what to say.:o

Thurgood Marshall proposed as Episcopal Church saint

Fellow parishioners of the late Supreme Court Justice and civil-rights activist Thurgood Marshall are asking that Marshall be considered a saint in the Episcopal Church.

His candidacy is being advanced by, among others, Cissy Marshall, Thurgood Marshall's wife, and the Rev. William Pregnall of St. Augustine's Church in Washington.

If the grass-roots proposal is approved - a process that takes years - Marshall will be added to the church's Book of Lesser Feasts and Fasts, one of three primary worship texts.

Marshall began attending St. Augustine's in 1965, when he came to Washington to serve as the first black U.S. solicitor general, under President Lyndon Johnson. Johnson nominated Marshall as the first black Supreme Court justice in 1967.

I found this on yahoo's main page. Thought it was funny.

LOS ANGELES - Farfrompoopen Road, the only road to Constipation Ridge, lost to Divorce Court and Psycho Path, which placed No. 1 in an online poll of the nation's wildest, weirdest and wackiest street names.

Mitsubishi Motors sponsored the poll on the Web site http://www.TheCarConnection.com and more than 2,500 voters cast their ballots during a week of voting that ended this month. Winners were announced Friday.

"Our readers really stepped up with some insane street names," said Web site publisher Paul Eisenstein. "Our panel had a difficult time narrowing several hundred down to the 10 our readers voted on.

"But we learned a lot about the byways of this country, not to mention the collective sense of humor of city planners everywhere."

In first place was Psycho Path in Traverse City, Mich., followed by Heather Highlands, Pa.'s, Divorce Court in second and Tennessee's Farfrompoopen Road in third. Eisenstein said all the roads were verified, although some are private and hard to find.

The complete top 10 list included:

10. Tater Peeler Road in Lebanon, Texas

9. The intersection of Count and Basie in Richmond, Va.

8. Shades of Death Road in Warren County, N.J.

7. Unexpected Road in Buena, N.J.

6. Bucket of Blood Street in Holbrook, Ariz.

5. The intersection of Clinton and Fidelity in Houston

4. The intersection of Lonesome and Hardup in Albany, Ga.

3. Farfrompoopen Road in Tennessee (the only road up to Constipation Ridge)

2. Divorce Court in Heather Highlands, Pa.

1. Psycho Path in Traverse City, Mich.

Don Knotts Dies at 81

Don Knotts, the irrepressible comic actor who won five Emmys as Deputy Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show, died Friday night in Los Angeles; he was 81. Knotts died of pulmonary and respiratory complications at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, and had recently suffered health problems that kept him from making an appearance at his hometown of Morgantown, West Virginia, last August. Knotts started out in entertainment as a ventriloquist before returning to college and then enlisting in the army at the onset of World War II. After the war and college, he returned to New York and pursued a career in radio and television; he nabbed a part as a psychiatrist in the Broadway play No Time for Sergeants, which starred actor Andy Griffith. He reprised his role in the film version, and after moving to Los Angeles, was cast opposite Griffith in the actor's eponymous sitcom, The Andy Griffith Show. The show ran from 1960-1968, and Knotts won an unprecedented five Best Supporting Actor Emmys in a row as manic deputy Barney Fife, a role for which he would forever be identified. After leaving the show, Knotts embarked on a film career, appearing in family-friendly films such as The Incredible Mr. Limpet, The Reluctant Astronaut and The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, among others. His career in the 70s was marked primarily by Disney films such as The Apple Dumpling Gang and No Deposit, No Return, until he joined the sitcom Three's Company in the middle of the show's run as the bumbling landlord Mr. Furley, forever interfering in his tenant's lives. After Three's Company, Knotts made innumerable appearances in television shows and occasionally films; one of his most notable recent roles was as a mysterious television repairman who sets strange events in motion in the film Pleasantville. Knotts was married twice, to Kay Mets from 1948-1969, with whom he had two children, and to Lara Lee Szuchna from 1974 to 1983.
