I'm glad you do this. Some one has to stop those kids from reading.

That is so cool to hear! It is amazing how much children touch our lives as teachers; I can only hope to touch them as much.

I absolutely love teaching my first and second grade students. I "loop" with my students from first to second grade, so I really feel like I get to know them as well as their families.

I just completed my second Master's Degree in education, and I am now exploring different Ed. D programs. Part of me is looking for a new challenge. I am thinking about getting my supervision credentials and looking for a position as a Student Teacher Supervisor.

I teach high school Spanish

High school French teacher checking in....as far as making a difference, I think at the high school level you may never know if you made a difference or not. I say that because some students are just motivated regardless of what I do, and to others a smile on a bad day may make a difference.

I fell into teaching when I went back for my MA after a semester off and working in the computer industry. I was a TA at the university and had a good time teaching there. One of my MA colleagues had an opening at his school for a French and German teacher - I interviewed and got the job. I'm now at a different school and only teaching French (my passion). Some people say that anyone can be a teacher, but I really don't think that is true. If anyone could do it, more people would stay.:o Had I listened to my grandma when I was 15, I would have been a teacher from the start- she knew I had it in me.

Best wishes to all GC teachers and student teachers for a successful academic year. Keep up with the professional development!;)

I passed my LAST state requirement! I've been teaching with a temp. certified here in the city for the last 3 years but now my perm. state certification paperwork can go through!

This last requirement was a videotaped lesson. Talk about stressful. It'd being phased out by the state and I can see why!!

Congratulations!

As for making a difference: When I taught 1st grade, it was easy to see. I taught at an inner city school in Dallas. I really enjoyed working with the kids. The majority came into school on the first day not knowing how to do anything! And to hear/see them reading and writing at the end of the year made me feel great.

With middle school and high school, I don't think you see the impact that you make quite so easily. I know I had secondary teachers who got me interested in certain subjects or books and they may not have even realized it. I think the impact we make is further down the road and a little bit quieter.

I have worked with several teachers who decided to go into education "later". Just get ready for culture shock. lol

#1 - Your "Half-hour Lunch" in reality is only about 20 minutes.

#2 - The kid who drives you craziest all year will have perfect attendance. (Mom doesn't want him/her home either.)

#3 - The above mentioned kid will also be the one you miss the most the next year.

#4 - If you have a "bad" kid in your room, don't pray that he will move. If he does move, you run a 95% chance of getting a new kid who is worse. (That happened to me.)
