I found some semi-soft chocolate chip cookies. Not my preference but they did me well in a pinch.

aephi alum 12-12-2011 12:42 AM

Soft and warm, straight out of the oven. *purr*

ASTalumna06 12-12-2011 01:17 AM

Ok, I did think of one kind of cookie that should ALWAYS be soft.. Snicker Doodles! And you can really only find soft ones if they're home-made.

Or in TGIFriday's newest dessert! I can't remember what it's called exactly.. But there are big oreos, filled with ice cream, and topped with whipped cream and chocolate and caramel sauces. Mmm...

I'm not sure I knew you're pregnant. Congrats!!

As for Panera, pay me little attention on that one. I have semi-irrational issues with Panera. And I also have a pet peeve (again, perhaps semi-irrational) about the current trend in many chain bakeries (Panera and Whole Foods come to mind) of making things like cookies and scones so big that I think they lose their character.

On top of that, I guess I'm a bit of a (semi-irrational) snob when it comes to shortbread -- I've been baking shortbread for over 30 years. I don't think I've ever had a store-bought shortbread, even one I liked, that I thought could compare to homemade, unless the store in question was a good, local bakery that made them fresh. Good shortbread is made with nothing but butter (real butter), flour and sugar, with maybe a touch of flavoring such as vanilla or almond extract or citrus zest. For that reason, I don't think one can get the right delicate consistency for shortbread from a pre-made dough that places like Panera pretty much have to use.

But hey -- pregnant lady gets to eat and enjoy whatever makes her happy!! :D

SWTXBelle 12-12-2011 10:43 AM

A student just brought me the most delicious homemade shortbread.

I am so glad I don't live in Alabama. (http://www.aolnews.com/story/alabama...ts-to/2057161/)

I am eating it all now . . .

agzg 12-12-2011 10:54 AM

I don't really like cookies.

As with cake and pastries, I have to really be in the mood for cookies. And I'm very picky about the ones I eat. Chocolate chip, snicker doodles, Oreos, and sugar cookies are pretty much it for me.

Damn skippy. Pregnant lady is uber pregnant right now, 34 weeks. Send shortbread recipe ASAP, por favor. One suitable for Christmas. :) (Does my comment about contractions make sense now?)

Get out of this thread. Now.

Although, I don't really care for cake, so to each their own.

Perfect sense. And I'm thinking now I did know at one time, but in my old(er) age had forgotten. :o

So as not to further aggravate Dr.Phil, I have posted the recipe in the recipe thread you started last year. Find it here.

DrPhil 12-13-2011 04:15 PM

LOL. Thanks for the recipe, Team Hard.

I was thinking that too!!

I was going to say I'm team soft, but then I had store bought soft cookies today and they were AWFUL.

I will say, though, that an exception to this is the Lofthouse brand sugar cookies. (sorry if they've been mentioned already, just read quickly through the thread).

Look here, Team Soft Traitor, go sit with MysticCat and agzg. LOL.

I agree that some cookies are gross regardless.

lovespink88 12-13-2011 11:15 PM

^^^It was a huge disappointment. A chocolate chip cookie would have been much appreciated in that moment...and it was crap :(

Not all soft cookies are created equal.

Hey MysticCat - where's my shortbread?

Team Soft and Warm! Always!!!

pshsx1 01-03-2012 08:03 PM

Soft, gooey (for chocolate chip), fresh out of the oven = you will have my heart for eternity (after Sen, of course).

agzg 01-03-2012 08:55 PM

I'm not gonna lie, I made M&M cookies for Christmas and took them to the various Christmases we had this year. Everyone loved them.

They were soft.

SCGreekGeek 01-03-2012 11:53 PM

Soft cookies all the way. But never ever those chewy chips ahoy. *GAG*

DubaiSis 01-04-2012 02:05 AM

I'm with MysticCat on this one. I don't especially like chocolate, so chocolate chip cookies aside, I like sugar for home made or short bread for store bought. And sugar cookies should be made with LARD, not butter, for god's sake not margarine and not crisco. The crispy deliciousness goes up 10 fold.

And if I may add, store bought short bread cookies shmeared with store bought jar frosting (vanilla only) is my guilty indulgence.

moe.ron 01-04-2012 10:03 AM

definately soft

KillarneyRose 01-04-2012 10:30 AM

As usual, I'm going to be persnickety about things. I prefer my cookies hard around the edges but chewy in the center.

Case in point: Giant (it's a grocery store) makes these incredible oatmeal raisin cookies that, when you bite into them, have a satisfying crunch. Then, as you work your way to the middle, they get soft and chewy and buttery.....oh man, they are GOOD!!!
