I'm not as "up in arms" about the advisors saying they underinvited, necessarily. I could see a conversation going like this...

Advisor of ABC: "I'm surprised your chapter didn't make quota"
Advisor of XYZ: "Yes, it turns out we underinvited"

Underinvited can mean that you should have invited 3X quota instead of 2X quota, in hindsight, because not as many women accepted invitations as they anticipated. That's different than intentionally underinviting in order to be able to take more Freshman in COB. After all, there are no guarantees that they'd be successful in COB. It's a risk to do that.

Heck, I don't even care if they did say "we didn't want to take the full upperclassmen quota, because we wanted to pick up some more freshmen." It's a strange decision, but it's their decision to make.

Being new to this site, I guess I now know what to expect when I ask a question of this nature. I'll be more guarded next time. I really expected more sympathy than scrutiny. Now I just feel like I've gotten slammed for being a part of a successful chapter who doesn't have to COB...whereas if I'd been part of a smaller chapter & had a question like this, everyone would've been kind & helpful. At least now I know.

This post is pretty reflective of your "sour grapes" attitude.

It may be questionable behavior in some people's eyes but you can't force them to take upperclassmen. If anything, they might get some flack from their HQ, maybe not.

I think you're just going to have to swallow some of your pride and acknowledge that not all things recruitment are 100% fair.

Jealousy then. It comes off as not fair that these struggling chapters got to take more freshmen than you did. Your naming of names in the rivalry thread is enough to tell me exactly what your level of panhellenic spirit is. Newsflash, we are a LOT of alumnae here, and therefore we're giving you advice from beyond the "It's not fair" and "OMG TATTLE" grounds that many campuses devolve into during recruitment.

Put the big girl panties on and take the responses you get as they are given. You don't have to agree, but don't play hurt. You can be more 'guarded' however you like, but you'd do better to try and change your perspective instead.

AOII Angel 04-16-2011 11:52 PM

Maybe they should just let you choose their new members for them so it will be "fair." Do you not see how at some point you are infringing on another group's membership selection rights? No one broke any rules. Who cares who has more freshmen, you all have the same number of members. It just means that each of your chapters will have a bigger class than usual graduate in different years. DG will and has survived much worse.

Darn it, the OP deleted most/all of her posts and I am trying to follow this thread to learn something, and I'm now completely lost. I'll just ask AZ-AlphaXi to explain all that RFM stuff to me next time we have lunch. This is too confusing.

You can probably piece it together, but most of the pertinent stuff was quoted.

Would a collegian even get an N'Sync reference? I mean... I was in high school when they started to break up. They would have been in elementary school?

I mean, they'd probably get that that was Justin Timberlake. And maybe JC based on the America's Dance Crew show, but I think Chris Kirkpatrick in the background there would be utterly unknown to them.

/kidding kidding

Also, I doubt they've seen The Land Before Time, either.

This is so depressing.

I bet they would know N'Sync in the same way we knew NKOTB.

We're talking boy bands? This, I understand! Backstreet Boys = guilty pleasure.

agzg 04-17-2011 12:18 PM

I'm thinking about it, Land Before Time was definitely made before they were born. I'm 5 years out of college and was probably 4 or 5 when it was really popular.

Of course, there are multiple Land Before Time movies. Even though the first one was the best.

There are like 25 LBT movies and all but the first should die.

I'm going to go eat my tree star now.

I don't think she's a collegian, she's an advisor (albeit probably a young one).

Quite frankly it sounds like they effed up when they raised total by 20 percent and didn't give the smaller chapters time to get up to it before formal. I also think a uc quota that's almost half of normal quota is just bizarre. I also think that any advisor (I'm referring to the woman the OP referenced who said they underinvited - in what context it doesn't really matter) who is daft enough to say ANYTHING about membership selection in a public forum should probably not be advising.

In other words this system is a hot ass mess.

I distinctly remember singing "Phi, Phi, Phi" during rush my sophomore year.

If she's an advisor, she's ridiculously immature to be whining about any of it on a message board. I think a lot of us who post here and hold volunteer or paid positions within our organizations like to be a little more discrete about the goings ons of any specific chapter.

Based on the OP's level of outrage, though, that advisor could have said just about anything. I could see "our return rates were lower than we expected for upperclassmen" or "we have to rethink how we split invitations between freshmen and upperclassmen" or something like that. At a post-rush forum, talking about why you didn't make upperclassmen quota, it could just be that the advisor was admitting it was her chapter's problem, instead of blaming the new system.

My guess is that she's a collegian - recruitment chair - or a very young advisor. And my guess is that the other advisor was not speaking in 'public' but among the other advisors/recruitment chairs or possibly even in personal conversation with the OP. Seeing that you're not going to meet UC quota would result in that conclusion, and in those meetings a lot of the pretense drops down. Regardless, I 'blame' the OP for repeating it more than the person for saying it. Were she privy to such conversations they're not supposed to be shared.

I don't think the system's likely all that bad. If quota increases next year most chapters should be at total after quota (and although the high UC quota is unusual, it seems like a high number of transfers/UC PNMs warrants it. If without it a few chapters were primarily receiving UC and with it, the spread is more even, well all the better.) Whether an active or an advisor, OP needs to grow up, and her eventual absence from the process - in lieu of her learning better - will solve more problems than not.

I always thought in my heart of hearts you would be a BSB or NKOTB fan, DrPhil.

I'm going to try to give this effort "All I have to give."

AZTheta 04-17-2011 02:59 PM

Idk, agzg...thinking about DrPhil's music knowledge (from past convos), I'm suspecting she's likin' BoyzIIMen but just too shy to say so, publicly. So I'm encouraging you, DrPhil...come on out, it's okay, you're among friends here.

agzg 04-17-2011 03:07 PM

Oh I already know she loves BoyzIIMen. :)

Oh the memories :)

My sister was a huge NKOTB fan so their music is the first I heard growing up (she is 8 years older), and the BSB are the heroes of my teens. NSYNC not so much.

BSB is still the music of choice for tipsy-middle-of-the-night-dance-on-the-bar-karaoke

DrPhil 04-17-2011 07:06 PM

1. BSB
2. BoyzIIMen
3. NKOTB
