My then boyfriend was living in Nashville and I lived in Atlanta. He came down for the weekend, and we had planned to go look at rings because he wanted to make sure he knew what I wanted.
So we were at the jeweler, they made him an offer and he whipped out a credit card and bought it. They sized it while we waited, and he took the box with the ring in it, and we walked out of the store. I couldn't believe he had done it, but I was thrilled. I told him he needed to talk to Dad, which he knew, so we drove over to see them. And yeah, I know - I'm not property, but my Dad is old school and it meant a lot to him. They had just sat down to lunch and so we sat with them and my boyfriend asked my parents if they'd be ok with us getting married. My parents of course said yes, and I suggested he show them the ring. He did and my mother said, "Put it on her, put it on her!" Well, he's wrapped around her finger, so of course, he took it out of the box and put it on me. And that's how I got engaged. It's actually perfectly us - and I don't feel like I missed out on any surprise. We did drive up to see his Aunt and Uncle that night, and we surprised them! They knew we were in the talking stages, but they hadn't known we were going ring shopping. Happy times. |
I had a "bad day" proposal. My boyfriend and I were trying to get ready to go up to Massachusetts with my parents for my job interview. My boyfriend was planning to propose in MA. Well, the paper I was supposed to be finishing for my honors project was going horribly. I was freaking out and crying when my boyfriend got to my apartment with my luggage. I was in sweats, unshowered, and feeling completely grossed. He started digging something (the ring) out of the dress shoes that he had packed for our trip while I paced around the apartment stressing out. He started following me around saying, "you are going to hate me for doing this now!!" Finally, I stopped my ranting and said, "What?" He got down on one knee and proposed. I dropped to both of my knees and said yes. He said that I deserved a big, beautiful proposal, but seeing me so sad and upset just made him want to make me smile. Well, he certainly did!!!!
(My honors project was approved, by the way.) |
