I kinda got the impression from the guy I talked to that it was one of the staff, but she's not on the staff list for Greek Life. I'm pretty sure Panhel. and not any individual chapter. Sorry about that. Being patient is hard. lol

Phi Sigma Rho Sorority accepts graduate students and would be a good fit for someone in a geology/environmental science grad program. However, we do not have a chapter at Iowa State yet :) .

But, Alpha Sigma Kappa is at Iowa State. I am not sure if they accept grad students, but there used to be a few sisters on GreekChat and there is a ASK forum that you could post to. You could also contact the chapter directly; the webpage is at

Transfer with a bachelor's degree?
 

Hi all,

I am transferring to a school where I've heard a lot of transfer juniors go through recruitment. The problem is, I will have completed my first degree by the end of this semester and will be pursuing a second bachelor's at that school. Do you think this will cause any problems? I would really like to be part of greek life but I am worried that the new school won't let me go through recruitment because I have a BA already. I will be 22 years old and in junior standing in the fall. I tried to contact the greek life office many times but they never return my call or respond to my emails so please help~:(

If it's NPC membership you're interested in, some NPC sororities will not extend membership at the collegiate level to women who already hold a Bachelor's Degree. There are a few who do. Do some research and find out if the sororities at your school even allow graduate membership. The search function here might also be helpful.

Additionally, pay close attention to the 2nd post of this thread.

Even if you're allowed to participate in recruitment, whether or not you'll actually receive a bid is an entirely different matter.

At my school, you're allowed to rush and pledge as a second degree student. One of the girls that went through recruitment this semester was a second degree who graduated from another college. She got a bid from another chapter

I just got my official acceptance letter to ISU!!!! Yeah, I'd been expecting it but it's still exciting. I'm so ready to move! Still waiting on an answer from greek life. Patience is becoming my mantra. lol :D

The school can dictate that a PNM is allowed to go through recruitment, but the individual sorority determines whether or not a PNM can pledge. Your school cannot tell an NPC group that they can pledge a second degree student if it is against their international policy.

thanks for the responses! hell a lot quicker than my new school office of greek life. I asked around the sorority members at my school and they all say they don't really know and that they never had such case. It definitely discourages me to go through recruitment.

I don't know how big Greek Life is at whatever SUNY school you're at, but just because the 2nd degree student was able to pledge on your campus doesn't mean that the OP will be able to do the same at ISU.

And to reference the thread you started, even if your PHC says okay, it doesn't mean squat if HQ says no.

Ok, I wasn't sure who this was in response to so I just wanted to say that while I know it's HQ and chapters final say, I would like greek life's go ahead and maybe even rush- since I can't think of any better way to meet and get to know all the chapters without seeming like I'm "shopping". Does that seem out of the question? And yes, I realize the probability of getting a bid is very low and I'm prepared for it. However, I would prefer to be active before alumna (I'm not banking on AI or anything-staying out of that argument) if that's possible. And nothing is going to happen if I don't get myself out there. That's why I've approached greek life even though they really have nothing to say about it. Hope that clears it up a lil! :)

NPHC organizations have Graduate/Alumnae/Alumni chapters for men and women who already have bachelors degrees. They are associated with cities/areas instead of particular colleges.

Even if you went through rush, fell in love with an org (and they fell in love with you), and their Inter/National disallows active membership, you could still be involved with the chapter - either by participating in socials/philanthropic events that they invite you to, or as an advisor (I know my org has spots for advisors who are not members of a Greek org - there might be others as well). I know you would miss out on the ritual aspect, but if you do get involved with an org that way, it would make you a more viable AI candidate for a lot of orgs...and it would eliminate the "shopping".

Please don't misunderstand - I'm not saying that you should go through rush for the sole purpose of trying to AI later...you should still go into rush with an open mind and with the possibility of being an active sister, but knowing that your options are limited.
