And since I was raised in Southfield, before my 'rents moved (right up the street, no less :rolleyes: ), my sense of direction was always off. When I was younger, I'd be thinking "Well, if we are south of Detroit, then why are we going DOWN to the city?" :confused:

And then, one day, it all made sense.

My sister-in-law still lives in "Detroit." Moved from Clawson to Birmingham (I think) a year or two ago. Her daughter is at Northern Michigan.

I had a GREAT time when we lived there being a TV director. We had both the Republican National Convention at Cobo/Joe Louis and Superbowl XVI at the Silverdome among other stuff during my time in Detroit. I was just looking at some videotape of the newscasts I directed there the other day. I think the only anchors from that era still on the air are Robbie Timmons at Channel 7 and Murray Feldman who is still at Channel 2 (which was a CBS affilliate back then). Actually, Jerry Hodak may still be on the air. I know Ray Lane and Sonny Elliot are gone, and Joe Glover is teaching college somewhere in Florida.

We lived basically at 12 and Woodward and the station is on 9 Mile between Greenfield and Southfield.

Good times. People are still amazed, though, when I say I enjoyed living in Detroit.

I bet. In classes, whenever we have a discussion of poverty/class/race or even in the most urbane situations, I get the 'Oh, you're from Detroit? I'm sorry/shocked/amazed.' or the 'How did you ever manage to make it out ALIVE!!??' When I tell them I love it (even though job prospects are slim), they are even more shocked. :rolleyes:

AND both of my parents work for the INDUSTRY. My mother is an analyst at Ford and my father just retired from GM Body Engineering. So, I can't think of any other place I'd rather be!:D

It is a really dynamic city in its' own way. Not like New York, Chicago, LA or others, but like itself.

A guy who was an intern at WJBK-TV when I was there is now some kind of special high level advisor to the Chairman of Ford, and, of course the President (or maybe Chairman?) of GM is a Delt.

As for places I'd rather be, it's pretty hard to beat Denver, but that doesn't diminish how much I enjoyed The Motor City.

Anyway, getting back to the topic, a Real World based in "Detroit" could be OK.

It has done a huge turn around and is now the trendy, hip place to hang out and live. Property values skyrocketed and blue collar can't afford to live there anymore!

haha, see I'm not really from Detroit (altho I live right in the heart of detroit), and I've only been to R.O. one time..so I can be forgiven, right?

There's been rumors circulating that MTV is planning on doing a Real World in Atlanta also. I've heard they purchased a house in the Buckhead area (trendy, young, affluent part of town) but it looks like they're going to be in Michigan and Key West first. I guess these types of rumors go around every city.

I'm still waiting for The Real World: Omaha. I mean it can't be that far off can it? Whenever that happens I want to be on the show, how much fun would that be! :rolleyes:

Robbie Timmons and Murray Feldman are both still on the air. So is Jerry Hodak. My mom was in the League of Women Voters with his wife (Peggy?). Sonny Elliot still does the weather at 4:21 pm and 5:21 pm on WWJ radio, with the same style that he had on TV. Most of my co-workers can't stand him and change the station when it's time for him to come on. I guess that's what led to him being pushed off of TV. Some didn't like his corny style.

It was sad when Joe Glover left because he was so into the MDA Telethon and it was never the same after that. I'm not even sure it was televised in the Detroit market last Labor Day. I couldn't find it if it was.

Detroit is back on the upswing with two new stadiums (baseball and football), a lot of theaters being refurbished and re-opened (Fox, State, Gem/Century), all on Woodward, along with the restaurants and bars that would be expected to follow those developments. CompuWare built their headquarters downtown and included a Hard Rock cafe and Campus Martius park, which has a skating rink. There will be a big winter carnival there the week leading into the Super Bowl. I hope that it is portrayed in good light for the Super Bowl AND Real World. It's not a bad place to be and it has a lot of potential. I think it will be fun to see familiar places on TV.

You should remind your niece that there is an Alpha Gam chapter at Northern Mich..lol

Thanks for the update on Sonny. He's got to be in his 80's by now. He's a great guy and most interesting. His real name is Marvin Schlosberg -- not sure of the spelling -- and was an Army Aircorps bomber pilot in World War II. He was shot down and spent time in a Nazi POW camp -- not a pleasant place for a Jewish man. He used to own an airplane with Jimmy and Johnny Butsicaris (Sp?), the owners of the Lindell A.C. bar in downtown Detroit. Don't know if it's still there or not.

You're right, too, about Joe and MDA. When I was there, he was doing almost 400 personal appearances a year on behalf of MDA. He actually separated his shoulder at an MDA softball game one night between the early and late newscasts. I had to tie his tie for him that evening.

Finally, Alpha Gam would love my neice, but being from a family with a single mom and a dad -- well, I'd better not even go there -- she's on a wing and a prayer and whatever scholarships she can find. No money for a GLO, I'm afraid. She is a great kid, and also very good looking, though, as well as smart.
