No I've seen sororities that flat out say "our mascot is Babs Bunny" or whatnot. Thse are the ones I was wondering about.

On our campus the local sororities all use registered trademarked characters: The Little Mermaid, Babs Bunny and Calvin. I think what's also silly is how dated all these characters have become. The little mermaid is still sort of available but its not everywhere like it use to be, Tiny Toons hasn't been on for years and they stopped printing Calvin & Hobbes several years ago. In 10 years some of the sisters will have no idea who some of these cartoons characters are. Plus if the chapter trying to go regional succeeds they'll have to change their mascot.

i guess the point i am trying to make and never stated is, when locals form a sorority, or when they are thinking about it, they should do some research and out of respect of existing groups try not to duplicate any other groups. there are plenty of other symbols and colors these girls could have chosen, but they made two choices that are identified with an existing group on their campus, which makes me wonder if they are hoping that they will be mistaken for the older group when they walk across campus wearing their blue shirt with the silver 5 pointed crown on it. for a group who wants to foster individuality, they really missed the boat.

I agree with doing some research....
I started a local on my campus and we fought hard to be origonal because everytime we turned around we had possibly duplicated someone else but we finally got to the point where we could say that we were not influenced by others around us AND still have meaning in what we chose

If we had copied a national we would make every effort to correct ourselves if we could.

Being in a sorority itself to us means that you are agreeing to a certian higher standard but we feel that you can do that in so many diffrent ways!
To anyone who is starting or has started a local I would encourage them to have respect for their fellow Greeks and be origonal! It may take a little effort but at least you can have pride in knowing what you did was truely yours.

* A question to everbody: How do you feel about locals and are there any on your campus (how do you interact with them and such)?
My group is local and it seems like we have such an easier time at it than other locals
