My husband proposed to me in Belfast, Northern Ireland at midnight in front of Queen's University. He had planned to wait til the next morning and ask me in the botanic gardens, but we were both restless and had slept off most of our jet lag, so we went out for a walk. And as we were getting around the university, he starts talking about how much he loves me, and how much he likes to be together, and saying some of our inside jokes, which is not that uncommon...so when he stopped and got down on one knee and said, "So for all of that, would you be my wife?" and gave me my beautiful ring. Of course, I said yes :). There were two security guards out on rounds when he did this, and they cheered us and honked their horn.

What a guy, he had managed to smuggle the ring with him the entire way from home to Belfast without me noticing.

I've seen quite a few at the marathons I've done, and even one couple getting married WHILE running (which was awesome).

The AOII Chapter at my university just posted a video on their facebook fan page of a chapter alumna getting engaged on the stage during a beauty pageant. Apparently they had met and fallen in love working on pageants together. He gave her a sash that said "will you marry me?"

On an unrelated note - does anyone think the down on one knee thing is cheesy? I'm pretty traditional but I always want to roll my eyes when I see or hear about it. I'm going to opt for a romantic proposal sans dirty pant knee.

I think I would be so excited, I would completely forget whether he had knees or not. Lol!

My only "thing" with any future hypothetical proposal is that it NOT be in a public place. PLEASE.

At someone's home with some of our family around, ok.

The grocery store, mall, the zoo, anywhere where people are going to see/clap/watch---nooo.

I tend to not like things that involve being center of attention. It freaks me out. LOL.

I can def appreciate public proposals and think they're cute when I get to witness them, but never would want to be on the reeceiving end of it.

PS. a couple got engaged at the Jay-Z/Eminem concert in Detriot when I was there.

Hahahaha I though the same thing. "Dude, what if she said 'no'!!!! But they must have talked about it or he wouldn't have....I hope."

I've never seen anyone get engaged, I just realized.

Penn State and Syracuse

Oooohhhhh....I LOVE this topic! Both my fiance and I are Penn State graduates. It was at Penn State where we began to get serious. We graduated from the same high school, as well. He was active Navy while I was a full-time undergrad at Penn State. He received his A.A. from there and I received my A.A., 2 B.A.s and my M.Ed. all from there-so, we both bleed blue and white.

Anyway-this July, we were driving back from Ohio, after cleaning out my apartment. I had decided, earlier in the school year, that I just didn't want to be a lawyer but, instead I wanted to get my MSW. Fortunately, he agreed that it would be a good idea because I could move back to NY and be with him (as I attended-if I got into) at SU. I was bummed out as we drove home from Ohio because I felt as though I had let other people down-since I chose another path for myself. He said, "Hey-I know you love Penn State and we didn't get to make it back for THON...so, let's stop there on the way back to NY." I thought it was odd because it was a little out of the way (by about an hour or so). I agreed.

We parked on campus, in the garage, and walked over to the Creamery. We got ice cream and he said, "Hey-let's go check out the Lion Shrine." Once again, I thought...."This is weird. Why? Usually people go there for pictures with it for graduation, legacy pictures, etc." I said, "We've been to the shrine and we didn't bring cameras. Why?" He convinced me that it would be nice and it would cheer me up. We went to the shrine and we walked around it. I looked around and said, "Ummmmm....okay-we've seen it. We should probably go home, now." That's when I walked around the edge of it and he was on his knee. The week before he had kissed me on the "kissing bench" at Syracuse University. He told me during the proposal that he kissed me on the kissing bench because it was said that whoever you kiss on the bench is who you marry. I was in tears and so was he. It was great! It was the perfect place for us! I love how he incorporated both Penn State and Syracuse University!

We are having a fall wedding...at none other than....Penn State

My fiance proposed to me in his room at home. I was on his bed on his laptop and he had just gotten done taking a shower, because we were planning on going out. He just asked me if I could shut down the laptop, and when I asked why, he just said because. So I did and he pulled me off the bed so that I was standing across from him. He told me to close my eyes, so I did, and he lifted my hand and pulled off my promise ring, and told me to open my eyes and of course the open ring box was there when I did. Then he popped the question, I cried and said yes, of course :)

Even though I didn't get the traditional "down on one knee" proposal, I wouldn't have it any other way.

I actually love the more spontaneous proposals rather than planning it out . Don't get me wrong, I love the romantic ones in movies and stuff, but I think it takes alot of guts to NOT plan something and just do it when the time is right. Love your story :)

I proposed to my wife at TGI Fridays over some vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup. And yes, I did the cheesy one-knee-down and popped the question.. No one clapped or cheered. It was nice and quick. lol

A girl I knew from high school had this happen! Maybe it was the same girl, but I'm sure that's happened more than once, haha. Such a cute idea.

My fiancé surprised me at the O-phi-A national convention in July. Planned an amazing night for the two of us, and proposed in the City Gardens park in downtown, St. Louis, Missouri. I then got to do a candle pass at banquet the next night to reveal the engagement to my sisters :D

I proposed while we were on a hike at one of my wife's favorite national parks. But I was careful to do it when no one else was visible on the trail. (I think she was wondering why I kept looking back so much.)

My niece's now-husband proposed at the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Best view in the city - because you can't SEE the gosh-darn ugly thing when you're standing in it. ;)
