Exclamation MU May be Setting for New Reality TV Show

MU May be Setting for New Reality TV Show
By Laura Meyer
Staff Reporter

MU students may not have to watch reality television anymore. Instead, they may walk around campus and see it firsthand.
Warner Brothers is considering doing a new reality television show at the University of Missouri in the fall.

The show, Big Man on Campus, would be a collegiate version of the reality show, The Bachelor.

MU is one of three schools being considered for the show.

“ Missouri is a good representation of college life,” said Luke Conklin, Lead Casting Producer for Big Man on Campus. “The student body has personality, and the campus is beautiful.”

Big Man on Campus would follow one male student on dates with different college women.

“Our goal is to capture what it is like on a college campus, and provide an opportunity that students would never have before, and all the while, they could meet someone great,” said Ashley Edens, Casting Producer for Big Man on Campus.

Greek Life Coordinator, Kerry Fleming, said some of the National Fraternity and Sorority organizations have expressed hesitation about their members being involved with reality television.

“I hold some concerns mainly from viewing shows like MTV Fraternity and Sorority Life,” Fleming said.

Edens said Big Man on Campus wants to find the best students to represent MU. “We would never show Greek letters,” Eden said. The show would be able to say the student was in the Greek system, but would not say which fraternity or sorority he or she was a member of, Eden said.

“This is a show that we want to run for a long time,” Eden said. “If we present sororities and fraternities in a negative light, no school is ever going to want to participate.”

Students are excited about the opportunity of being on television and what it could do for MU.

Ashley Douglas, a sophomore Alpha Delta Pi, said, “I think it would be good for the campus, definitely great exposure.”

Delta Upsilon President, Ben Coen, had mixed feelings about Big Man on Campus.

“If it was portrayed right and actually showed the values of Mizzou and the values of our Greek Life here on campus, I think it would probably be a really good thing,” Coen said. “But, if it was portrayed in the wrong light and edited wrong to make us look bad, it could definitely hurt us in the long run.”

Aric Yackly was Vice President of Sigma Chi Omega, the fraternity featured on Fraternity Life 1 when the show was filmed. Yackly is currently a Graduate Assistant in the Greek Affairs Office at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He offered advice for student’s considering reality television.

“Be prepared for the experience to change your relationships and reputation on campus, but it will depend a lot on how you handle things,” Yackly said.

Yackly also suggested utilizing the university’s administration.

“Work as closely as you possibly can with your school's administration,” Yackly said. “They can do many things for you and are there to protect you as students, but you have to be open with them in order to do so.”

Casting Producers have been at MU this week recruiting and talking with students. Today, they are scheduled to hold a casting call in the lower level of Pershing Hall under Hitt Street Market.

“We’d love to be here, in Missouri, for the show,” said Edens.

The other schools being considered for Big Man on Campus are the University of Arizona and the University of Texas-Austin.

Producers will select which school they will be filming the show at during the summer. If MU was selected, filming would start at the beginning of the fall semester, and the show would be scheduled to air for the spring 2005 season.

Admitting as I do that reality TV shows are notoriously cheap to produce, and therefore popular with networks, cable outfits, and their content suppliers, I have a couple of nagging questions about the article:

** It seems to be an unspoken supposition that the casting would be heavily Greek, and that fraternity and sorority concerns are of prime importance -- why? With all due respect, at Mizzou about 20% of male undergrads, and 25% of female, are Greek, so if the cast were __statistically__ representative, it would be skewed toward "independents," if anything.

** Dating can produce "drama," especially if edited for maximum manipulative effect, but it's not the be-all and end-all of campus life. In addition some women -- and men -- might feel that essentially parading a batch of women around for several weeks to see which one will win the guy is a bit -- well, is demeaning the word I'm looking for?

But hey, if Mizzou wants to do this, fine by me. Can't really be much worse than the PR they've had in the past year with --

-their president (and his wife),

-the story in a campus alternative paper that sparked NPHC, IFC, and NPC concerns about lack of understanding of African-American students' traditions and issues,

- the blood drive debacle,

- and the cannon flap.

------------------
There's no "I' in "team" -- and there's no "a" in "definitely."

they've been to

ut-austin already.they spoke to all the sororities at a panhellenic meeting.after the meeting, all province presidents and general advisors of our fraternity were notified that if they show up on our campuses, our ladies are not to speak to them. collegians, be careful. those affiliated with reality tv shows may seem like such nice folks, and away from their jobs they might be, but reality tv is ultimately entertainment, and the director is not going to concern herself/himself with keeping your reputation or your organizations reputation out of the mud. we have to protect that ourselves.

Elaborate or link please?

I can understand why a small school no one's ever heard of would sign on with this - it would up their recognition factor. (SUNY Buffalo reputedly saw their number of applicants rise after Fraternity Life & Sorority Life aired.) But if there's a school out there that DOESN'T need any more publicity, it's Mizzou.

I also think it's kind of vain of the DU to assume that this would have ANYTHING to do with Greek life there - the person they pick could be an independent who has no connections whatsoever to Greeks. I mean, it's a huge school, I'm sure you can go through life there without Greek interaction. It's not as if it's DePauw.

I do agree with you.. However, with the student population being something like 25%+ greek, there is probably a good chance that if the "Big Man on Campus" isn't Greek, one of the girls he dates will be...

33girl ---

Just because, like Gideon, Elijah, and so many others, you asked for a sign . . . well, at least a link ---

Here's a link to the December 11, 2003 Kansas City Star story about the U of Missouri president and his wife making phone calls to a student-athlete while he was in jail:

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansas...7463553.htm?1c

Note that fairly far down in the article there are references to two sororities, along with comments by members of those sororities -- so there is a Greek slant to the story. A lot of the national coverage of this mess was undoubtedly on the sports pages and the sports segments of newscasts. You can use some of the names and other keywords in Google News or other resources to find many more articles following up on the story.

i have a question...

how would participating in this show be any different from a member of a fraternity or sorority participating in the real world or road rules or the bachelor?

Red face

YIKES!

They Promise the moon, but when it is edited, Greeks always look like SH*T. That is how they get sponsors and ratings!

These people have the knowledge of how to coerce people to do the stupid things they do for the camera.

Naiativty comes to mind!

Sikes, as you know with all of the stuff coming from Mizzou campus, it had to be a red flag for the rats that come out when they smell old cheese!

I would be curious to see what happens if they do pick us. (Why in the HELL wouldn't you film in AZ instead of MO?)

Many Greek houses here have been told by their nationals that they are not allowed to participate. Sooooo....if they pick a Greek, automatically they don't have many chapters to pick from. (Alhtough not many to us is a lot to you...maybe 17 fraternities out of 24, and 3 or 4 sororities out of 13.)

Also, if they pick a GDI, and he dates a sorority girl, I was under the impression if nationals says she can't do it, she can't even go on a date with him.

It's kind of like, sounds like a waste of $$$ and time to me....

A little off topic - but we are so quick to say how awesome it is that our sister/brother by greek terms is the star of a reality show if that person is out of college albeit by one or two years. Examples - Brad who is on the Real World and an ATO. Trista who is an Alpha Chi Omega. I am not saying this is wrong and obviously the big difference is is that they are out of college vs. in collge, but I think its a little funny how greeks are so quick to not want any part of reality tv but then celebrate their reality tv brother or sister stars.

It is a little ridiculous. The Lyre even had an interview with Trista. Granted, I guess she didn't make Greeks look that bad, but there are so many other people who could have been featured.
