Exclamation Mass Expansion at NIU

Northern Star Online

Four fraternities, one sorority may be added to NIU’s Greek Row

Four new fraternities and one sorority are one step closer to joining NIU’s Greek Row.

The Greek Life Standards Board is recommending approval for the organizations to join NIU, said Chris Juhl, activities advisor for Greek Activities.

The national fraternities selected to join NIU’s Greek Row are Sigma Nu, Phi Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Phi and Chi Sigma Tau. The sorority joining will be Kappa Phi Lambda, a multi-cultured, Asian-interest sorority.

Initially, eight groups applied for recommendation to join NIU, but the GLSB denied recommendation for Alpha Sigma Omega, Phi Rho Eta and Delta Sigma Phi.

Juhl explained the main reason was that eight groups were too many to bring to campus at once. The groups came and made their presentations for expansion and we chose five, Juhl said.

The GLSB gave the groups’ recommendations to the Interfraternity Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. The official approval lies in their hands. The IFC and the NPHC have until Feb. 6 to make their entrance official. Juhl stressed that this process is only a formality, and it is only a matter of time before the groups enter campus.

“They could be here by the fall, but that would be the earliest,” Juhl said.

However, Juhl predicted there will be groups that may not be so welcoming to four new fraternities and one sorority on campus.

“Some of the other fraternities, they don’t want the competition,” Juhl said. “They look at it like they need men filling beds or we’re not paying our bills.”

Having five new groups may take away from the pool of men that might rush their houses, Juhl said.

Crystal Hoppe, president of the College Panhellenic Council, said it is natural for other houses to be competitive.

“Everybody wants to be the best,” Hoppe said. “To be top in service hours, philanthropy ... If you have more groups on campus, someone will obviously be against it.”

Hoppe mentioned that the expansion could be positive for NIU.

“It could get more people involved,” Hoppe said.

As far as housing, the groups may live at a number of houses open in the area.

“There are landlords who are looking for tenants right now,” Juhl said.

However, the fraternities and the sorority don’t need a house on Greek Row to officially be recognized by NIU.

Three of the fraternities slotted to join will be returning groups to NIU.

“Sigma Nu had internal issues and shut down in the mid-’90s,” Juhl said.

Pi Kappa Phi left in the ’60s.

“They were only here about five to 15 years,” Juhl said.

Currently, 7 percent of NIU’s student population is Greek, which is 1,200 students. There are 575 women in sororities and 625 men in fraternities.

The national average for Greeks who make up a university’s student body is about 12 percent.

Post NIU will welcome five new Greek houses over the next three years

http://www.star.niu.edu/campus/artic...1004-greek.asp

All five Greek houses that were awaiting recommendation to come to NIU have been approved.

The Intrafraternity Council recommended that the three major fraternities, Pi Kappa Phi, Phi Kappa Psi and Sigma Nu all come to NIU, as long as they come at a pace of one house each year for three years, said Chris Juhl, activities adviser for Greek Affairs.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council had a Feb. 6 deadline to respond to the recommendation for Asian fraternity Chi Sigma Tau and Asian sorority Kappa Phi Lambda issued by the Greek Life Standards Board.

Since the NPHC did not respond by Feb. 6, the recommendation for both of these houses to join NIU stands as well, Juhl said.

Although Pi Kappa Phi, Phi Kappa Psi and Sigma Nu must come to NIU separately, the Asian fraternity and sorority can come to NIU at the same time.

“They’ll probably be here by the fall,” Juhl said.

The board will hold a meeting on Feb. 17 to decide when each of the three major fraternities can join the Greek community.

Juhl said one of the three fraternities may come this fall. However, it is too soon to tell which fraternity it may be.

National representatives from the organizations must communicate with NIU to decide which will come by fall; however, Juhl mentioned that the first fraternity to come probably will be either Pi Kappa Phi or Pi Kappa Psi.

National representatives from Phi Kappa Psi anticipate the opportunity to join NIU.

“We are absolutely looking forward to joining NIU,” said Shawn M. Collinsworth, executive director of Phi Kappa Psi National Headquarters. “We are always looking for new campuses that have good traditional programs and good sports programs.”

Collinsworth said they had been interested in coming to NIU for some time and were waiting for the opportunity to present itself.

“We only go to campuses where we’re invited,” he said.

This is not a new thread, and this one is older than the one to which you refer.

Greek groups selected
Two fraternities, one sorority to join NIU for fall 2004 semester

The time line has been set for the new fraternities and sorority that have been selected to come to NIU, said Chris Juhl, activities adviser for Greek Affairs, at the Greek Life Standards Board meeting Tuesday.

Social fraternity Pi Kappa Phi, Asian fraternity Chi Sigma Tau and Asian-interest sorority Kappa Phi Lambda have been selected as the three groups to join NIU for fall 2004.

Their national headquarters should receive the official letter of notification by March 1, Juhl said.

The other two fraternities will come in one at a time for the following two years, with Phi Kappa Psi joining by fall 2005 and Sigma Nu entering by fall 2006.

These groups are not the only organizations hoping to start chapters on NIU ground.

“Since we decided on these groups coming in, I’ve had four other organizations call me wanting to come here,” Juhl said.

The organizations have contacted Juhl by phone, he said, but have not yet written a formal request.

As far as housing, the fraternities that are coming to NIU may have to wait. Before a fraternity can actually get a house, they need to take time to develop their organization’s members first, Juhl said.

“It takes a good year to get a base of students together,” Juhl said.

The GLSB decided the next expansion time will be fall 2006, Juhl said.

Other groups are trying to get recognition to enter NIU as well but have missed cut-off times, said LaVerne Gyant, GLSB board member and director for the Center for Black Studies.

Nationally the NPHC may be for BGLOs, but at some colleges LGLOs and AGLOs are part of the collegiate NPHC.
Iowa State has a Latina sorority in NPHC but the Latino fraternity is in IFC.
