luau slogans

does anyone have any ideas for a slogan for a luau party, thats cute but not "dirty' or suggestive? i am trying to find something cute...but no such luck! any help would be appreciated...thanks so much!!

I don't know if this is lewd, but when ATO had a Hawaiian themed party their slogan was: "Come get leid!" Like... get a Hawaiian lei...

I think I may have spelled "lei" wrong.

It never ceases to amaze me how people can get away with cutesy luau themed parties. I cringe everytime I see themes like "Come get lei'd" because it really is a mockery of a culture, one that people have no problem commercializing.

I'm sure someone would make a big stink if a GLO threw a "Pow-wow" themed party poking fun at Native Americans. I just don't understand how come it's okay to throw a luau where Hawaiian punch is served with plastic leis and grass skirts--there's nothing Hawaiian in those things.

This post isn't meant to offend, just something to think about.

If you'll pardon the thread crash, OTW's post gave me an idea.

I wish I had a specific slogan, but given the previous post, about cultural sensitivity in this day and age, it may be better to go straight to the source on Hawaiian slogans, sayings, etc.

I went to a large enough university where there was a Hawaiian/Polynesian student cultural organization on campus. If there is one in your area, perhaps they could help you out with a slogan or theme that is not only appropriate, but a true celebration of the culture, without risking being offensive in some way.

I'm sorry I don't have more to offer on this one, but I hope the idea helps.

Okay, but nobody here is "poking fun" at Hawaiians. Sorry, we can't throw a geniune Hawaiian luau because for example, we dont' have enough money for leis that are made of geniune Hawaiian flowers and so we're making due as best as we can.

Amazing how you can find plastic leis derogatory but not Shaq's mockery of the Chinese language. There's something to roll your eyes over.

Gotta agree with ya, TeenyWahine... back in my days as an undergrad (when dinosaurs ruled the earth ) it wasn't unusual for theme parties to have backhanded mockeries of certain cultural groups. (Kamanawanaleiu punch -- yeah, right... gimme a f*ckin' break!) I've had the opportunity of partaking in a Hawaiian luau and learning Hawaiian customs from a former friend and co-worker when I was living in California, and suffice it to say it's nowhere near the sterotypes that abound.

Being part-Hispanic (and part Noo Yawk Irish as well), it gets me annoyed when we're all lumped into the stereotypical idea of Latin American culture, where the siesta is king (mañana is good enough for me) and all the music is Mexican mariachi.

I said it in that thread, and I'll say it again...Shaq's an idiot. Idiot comments like that are expected. I don't agree with what he said because what he said wasn't right, IT JUST DIDN'T BOTHER ME AS MUCH AS IT BOTHERED YOU. <---I'll roll my eyes to that.

In this day and age where GLOs are supposed to embrace diversity and celebrate other cultures, I find it odd that most would continue to do luau themed parties. adduncan did bring up a great idea by consulting Hawaii Clubs in your area. I'm sure they'd be a great resource for ideas that all can enjoy.

If anyone's interested, here's a link to a story about a luau controversy at Dartmouth, which happened a few years back. I know that most luau parties are not meant to be controversial, but it offends more people than you could imagine.

Shark in skirt, keep on insulting my opinions if you wish. I don't expect you to agree with me either. I just wanted to make sure that others were aware of this.

This will be my last post on the subject as I've already made it known how I feel about it. Rather than let this escalate into an all-out bitchfest just like the other threads, I'll let the discussion continue without further interruption from me.

I threw a party this past weekend which had a luau theme and tried forever coming up with a cute slogan for the flyers. The only thing I could come up with is "Nobody goes home without getting leid!" I know you didn't want anything "dirty" but I thought I'd share that for others.

delta tau delta at university of florida did something ignorant to that extent with the name "Mekong Delta." the frat boys dressed up like GI's and the sorority girls dressed up like vietnamese hookers. the asian community wasn't too pleased when that happened. i guess that's the same as poking fun at japanese.

funny, but i highly doubt that the party will celebrate the culture instead of just commercialize it and mock it. i doubt the polynesian community would really take kindly to being asked that.
