Post NPC sorority expansion policies

If our greek governing body wanted to solicit another NPC sorority is it possible to just pick one and call them? A few of the web sites I saw giave the contact information as the NPC organization.

Also is there any set amount of time one should wait between expansions? Or would it depend on interest.

Also does anyone know which large National sorority seems to be the most expansion orienteted?

Thanks in advance.

Hi James!

I think you have to contact the NPC. Then they have to let all 26 sororities know. Then interested ones will contact the campus. But I think everyone is in expansion mode. It just depends on which campuses become available.

Part of it does depend on whether there is an established group that wants to affiliate or if they'd be starting from scratch. Some groups don't want to hassle w/ pre-existing problems in a group. Others don't want to deal w/ putting one together.

Good Luck!

Just a thought....expansion is half the battle, maintenance the other half....it does no good to say "we opened 10 chapters last year" if you also closed 6.

I think you do have to contact NPC but I have heard of groups being founded with the idea of going XYZ or whoever...usually by sisters of that org that transferred.

So and so group might look good on paper but when you get into it further they might have national rules on housing, etc that would make them wrong for your campus...that's why it's best to contact everyone.

If your campus decides to open expansion, this is the NPC procedure to be followed:

The College Panhellenic must unanimously agree to open the campus for expansion and have the approval of University administration.

The NPC is notified by the university that the campus is considering expansion. If there is a fraternity in which the campus is most interested, their expansion notification should indicate this preference.

The NPC notifies it's members that this campus is open to expansion. The preferred group is given first option to accept or decline the opportunity to present to the campus. The other NPC members will also accept or decline the opportunity.

The university is informed as to which NPC groups wish to explore campus expansion. The College Panhellenic and university admin usually narrow this list down to 2-4 groups. These groups are invited to present themselves on campus and essentially state their case why their group would be the best one to pick.

The Panhellenic votes on one group and this group is informed of the decision. It is up to the sorority to begin recruitment and colonization activities according to the schedule outlined by the university.

And as another note, there is not a standard time limit between bringing on new chapters. It all depends on the "carrying capacity" of your campus. Like, do you only have 2, but see a big interest in Greek Life developing the last few years, or do you have 15 and only 3 are at total? The College Panhellenic must be very wise in deciding if the campus can support another healthy group. I know my alma mater is bringing a group back right now even though only a couple of the 8 sororities are at total and many did not make quota this past formal rush. If I had the opportunity, I would advise them not to expand.
