Why go Greek?

I have very specific reasons why I'm glad my daughter is in a GLO and why I want my son to join as well.
1. The bonds of brotherhood/sisterhood are forever. It is a powerful network that can help you your entire life.
2. Being a Greek gets you involved with philanthropy in a way that is fun and rewarding. Hopefully, you will carry this with you and continue giving back to your community.
3. College is more than books and being Greek helps you develop social skills and promotes involvement. It adds structure, discipline and goals.
4. It's a great support system.
5. It gives you an opportunity to break away from the old home town syndrom and expand your thinking and horizons.
5. I would think there are two different "college life" scenrios. You can go to class then sit around your apartment/dorm OR you can be a part of something wonderful, exciting and huge. At the heart of all major campus events are Greeks. I want my kids to be a part of eveything (well ALMOST) college defines.

Im so sending this to my aunt. She did an alumni initiation into my GLO this last spring and her oldest is heading to my old campus this fall. We have been pressuring him to rush (my fiance was in one of the best fraternities on campus) and this will maybe help him and his dad. Thanks

Another reason to go Greek

You can study hard and get excellent grades for four years and never come close to the things you can learn in a few short months in a fraternity (or sorority).

For one thing, no college class in the world can teach you how to motivate people like having a leadership position in a fraternity can. What's more, fraternity leaders can't dangle a fat paycheck to help induce motivation. It's not just the chapter president learning these skills, either. Everyone from the scholarship and philanthropy chairmen to the intramural coach has to figure out how to get people to show up on time, cooperate enough to get something accomplished, prevent distractions from ruining progress, make sure they have any needed equipment, manage their slice of the budget, the works. And if they don't get the job done right, the people that tell them they screwed up are their friends and brothers (or sisters), not their bosses or professors.

You don't learn these skills in class or the dorm. You might be able to learn these skills on the job, but what an advantage it is to learn them in college!

That made my day. Thanks. There's something we can throw back at the GDIs that tell us that we're "buying our friends".

Aww, please don't stereotype GDI's in that we all think you 'buy your friends' ! I'm still a GDi unfortunetly, but I'm still pro-Greek!!

But, on the topic at hand..I'm going to be using that post to show to my parents! Thanx!!

I reworded it a little. I'm sorry if I offended you, but I meant those specific GDIs who say those things and talk trash about GLOs, not the independents who, while are not Greeks and don't want to be, respect us for what we do and don't hate on us for some of the things they may have heard about Greeks.

Thanks for the nice words you guys!

Some of the fraternities at LSU invite Seniors to functions the second semester and over the summer. We have had so few go Greek in the past (but it is improving) that most of those interested in my son's class would only know members of ONE fraternity. I wish there was a way, outside of rush, they could meet the others as well. As it is, New Orleans is the real feed for fraternities then Baton Rouge. I just hope he and his friends keep an open mind.

edited-TOM, I sent you a PM

JAM does it again...

Great Post.

I used to have a copy of an article on greek life that appeared in the November 1996 (I believe..or 95, but i know it was November) issue of GQ on Greek Life and why we make better leaders. It was very positive and basically said that we are more productive members of society because we learn people skills be being forced to deal with people and situations that non-greeks dont have to. Say you dont like your roomie in the dorms hes an asshole and a jerk, well you transfer rooms, right? In greek life escape isnt the answer, you have to learn to deal, and sometimes for 4 years. I'll see if I can dig the article up. Its been a while since I saw it. Hmm......

i'd say pro-greek and gdi are direct opposites....you're just no longer a gdi, not yet a greek!

GREAT THREAD!!! I love it!

For those who say greeks pay for friends...

Pretty good deal I received in return. All my Alpha Gamma Delta friends are worth more than I ever paid in dues!!!
