JUICYCampus
Someone mentioned the website Juicycampus the other day (which I had never heard of until it a few days ago) and I decided to check it out. I was wondering if anyone else has? I was blown away by how many people posted on there (because you don't have to give a name) and did nothing but, say really mean things about others (giving full names and telephone information).
Alot of what is talked about on there is Greek Life. If you read through it-I'm pretty sure many of you would be really shocked that people say the nastiest things about people on there without giving it second thought-that's why I wanted to ask:
Do you find websites such as Juicycampus entertaining or interesting since people can say pretty much whatever they please or do you find it to be offensive and possibly a law suit waiting to happen? In fact, they have talked about trying to shut down the site because of just that reason. Thoughts?

I just read the "Hottest gays at Carolina" thread. I chuckled.
It's entertaining in the way that absurd things usually are. But I wouldn't be surprised or upset if most private campuses blocked the site from their network.

I'm just amazed at how people will call others out "by name" and think nothing of it....they go on there saying certain people have STDs, do coke, etc. I was really in shock. It's one thing to go on there and bash sports teams, school reputations (even if all of that is still crossing the line) but, to use someone's actual name on there is pretty bad. I'm still in disbelief.

I had a difficult time navigating that site. Didn't get a chance to see the "juicy" topics.

i heard about Juicy Campus via a newstory that was on yahoo a little while ago. I checked out a school from my homestate, and read some uh...personal information about a girl that I went to high school with.
I'm just glad that it's not at my school

You can actually click on the "Greek Organization" tab on the side or you can scroll to the top and input your school's name. Many schools aren't listed but, mine is. Even so, it was interesting to hear comments about other GLOs on different campuses but, I couldn't believe some of the other stuff I read. You have to click on the topic and view the replies. Sometimes the topic isn't even that controversial but, people will add something bad to the mix by using someone's name and other identifying information (such as giving out the person's screen name or phone number)....Wow-check it out more and you'll really get an eye-opener about people who don't care much for discretion...

I can't view the site at work - it's blocked as pornography, LOL! Doesn't sound like I'm missing much

I brought it up because someone on Greek Chat commented about the site (in a Recruitment thread-I think)...I was wondering how many people have ever heard about it before. I know that here on Greek Chat people are very "Greek Spirited" in the fact if someone asks about a certain GLO-everyone tells that person each campus is different. It's very rare to have people on Greek Chat say something nasty about another GLO on various campuses so, it was really weird to go onto this website (which struck my curiosity when the girl brought it up) and see some of the nasty things people were saying about other GLOs.
Then, when I read what people were saying about each other-I was stunned. So, I wanted to know how people view sites like that (since we are all very Greek united on this site) and what effect everyone thinks this site may have on Greek life...I can't really imagine going on a website (annonymous or not) and putting down other GLOs...I'm so used to such a positive site where people commend other GLOs for their founder's days, philanthropy events and new members that when I saw this site-I didn't know what to think.
Am I the only one in the dark who didn't know this site existed until the other day? Sometimes I think I'm VERY in-the-dark because certain sites everyone seems to have known about-I had no clue existed...such as finding out about Wikipedia until the last semester of my senior year of college....and even Myspace was new to me then, as well...

A whole lot of schools are not included on that site. So, many of us have no use for that site other than to be a voyeur. And I found that site not interesting enough to be a lurker.
Now that you know the site exists, what are you going to do with it? Go on there to read the latest person being dragged through the mud? Come here to announce that there's a site to go to to see someone dragged through the mud? There's a reason some colleges do not want to be associated with that site and want it closed.
It isn't the first site that has been an uncensored place where college students (and noncollege students) have gone to put people's lives on blast. Those types of sites make other sites, that are known for being rude and cut throat, look like playgrounds.

No, I read it that day that I checked it out for the first time. I'm not sure what I could do about it. You would think enough people who have been on there (that may have been mentioned by name) would make a big enough issue about it.
In fact, some people have heard of the site through other sources such as Yahoo groups and what not. My school's newspaper did a story on it. So, now people are learning about this site. I'm wondering if there is something that can be done because although I have not been named on it (I already graduated so, I doubt anyone really cares much about what I'm doing) I still find it to be very offensive. That's just it, though. PNMs are coming on Greek Chat and saying that they already read through Juicycampus and now want advice from this site.
Whether you may think that I am trying to bring it to everyone's attention so they can blast each other or not (which, I'm really not doing it for that reason)...the fact is that other people are looking at this site for advice (which is scary). We all know how people who know very little about Greek Life (because they haven't joined a GLO yet) assume these sites are the Holy Grail. How many PNMs have talked about not wanting to join a house because their friends didn't care for the reputation? It may seem stupid-but, we seriously have to consider this.
I know NPHC and NPC GLOs operate different (as in how they do membership selection) but, wouldn't you be mortified if someone didn't want to join your GLO because of some stupid stuff they read? What's worse is that people keep talking about how they can't have racy photos on Facebook and Myspace because of future employers. What if these same employers (not saying I agree with this in anyway) choose to check out sites such as this and maybe believe what is said about certain people doing Coke, and other things?
If anyone has any advice on how to even get rid of the site-that would be great too...so, please feel free to contribute.
1.) Do you think the site will have an effect on PNMs or future employers?
2.) Do you think the site should be taken down or is it just another way for people to exercise their "Freedom of Speech" (because I'm sure many people will argue that)?
3.) When did you find out about sites such as this, Wiki, MySpace, Facebook, etc.? I'm just curious considering I found out about many of these sites (to include Greek Chat) not too long ago (about a year ago or so)....?
Thoughts...

We already had a thread where it was mentioned, I had to google and see what it was.
http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...ad.php?t=93616
If schools really are doing stories about it, we should know about it...much like Alexandra Robbins' great piece of literary poo, Pledged and those "other" Greek sites. Did we ever talk about the Daily Jolt on here? I forgot all about it till a couple days ago...it was kind of like juicycampus but not as trashy. I think facebook & myspace killed it.
If they keep mentioning people by name and it's not policed, eventually someone will sue them and the site will get shut down. I mean, at a lot of those schools, the Greeks have 1) the reputation of being well off and 2) lots of lawyers in the family.

It should be taken down because the main purpose of the site is to abuse Free Speech and do so under their school's name.

From a news perspective, I agree.
From an "ooooh, lookie here" perspective, no need to advertise if this site is being discussed elsewhere.

Disgusting.
Our's is marked by trash talking between the sororities, fraternities, and the GDIs. It's a lot of bad/wrong information. Not entertaining in the least.
