The viking tradition is used mostly at chapters in the Southeast. These chapters usually consider the viking their unofficial mascot. They also usually have a Viking Party sometime during the year. My chapter doesn't use the viking so I don't really know much else about it.

We use the Gator as the mascot in Texas chapters due to the fact that you get gATOr

good day to all

hi is it ok if i can post here where i am not member of this fraternity? because you have the same name of fraternity here in the philippines. i am a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Philippines Inc. And the organizer of Alpha Tau Omega in philippines is a quitter or a break away in our fraternity (ASP). Because they introduce themselves international and affiliated in ATO-USA. Is it true? Just want to clarify. Thanks and have a good day to all

No, ATO does not have any chapters in the Philippines or anywhere else outside of the US. In fact, our national Fraternity's website has a note at the bottom of the home page with notice about it.

You know this is really interesting to hear. I had never heard of this tradition until now, even though I go to a school in the southeast.

However, we DO have a big build party every year called Shipwreck. Though the party tends to have a pirate theme, thinking about it now I wouldn't be surprised if this evolved from a Viking tradition.

I've had several brothers go down to that Viking bash, but honestly, I never saw the viking as a mascot outside of maybe intramural sports. Either way, it's great to know it's a tradion in so many chapters. Unfortunately, my chapter closed down shortly after I went alum. Our campus isn't very greek friendly. From what I heard, they were doomed no matter what.

we have a viking week here at the Alpha Sigma chapter at Oregon State University. Its a fun week, but probably nothing compared to the chapters in the south east.

The Viking Tradition comes from Birmingham Southern College's Beta Beta Chapter. It was started in 1963. Unfortunately, Nationals took Vike away from us in 2006 as a sanction. We replaced the party with Shipwreck.
Here is a link to the history about the Viking traditon:
