Schools where you absolutely positively need recs
Let's start the list. I'll compile on this first post by continuously editing. Carnation, could you sticky this?
You Must Have Recs If You Are Attending Any Of These Schools:
All SEC schools (no exceptions!): Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, Miss State, Arkansas, Vandy, LSU, Texas A&M
Big XII: Texas, Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Missouri, Texas Christian
ACC: Florida State, Clemson
Pac 10: USC, Arizona
Southern Methodist
Southern Miss
Up for Debate:
Big XII: Nebraska, Kansas State, Iowa State
ACC: UVA, NC State, Wake Forest, UNC
Pac 10: University of Washington, UCLA, Cal, Arizona State
Big 10: Northwestern
UCF
Depauw
Washington & Lee
Indiana--not a must have but a good idea
If your school is on the "up for debate" list, you should probably get them anyway, they're just not as critically important as the ones in the first list.

ACC
Would Clemson, UVA, or FSU be considered? Any other ACC schools?

I'd say FSU, yes. UVA, not necessary but wouldn't hurt. I think it's becoming more necessary at Clemson.

Texas Schools:
UT, A&M, Tech and Baylor (covered in your Big XII category)
TCU and SMU
Will let others comment on other Texas schools as I am less familiar with their recruitments.

I would think that UC Berkeley, UCLA and USC would require recs (or HIGHLY recommend recs)
Correct me if I am wrong on that

USC is super competitive. Recs a plus there.

I know USC is definitely competitive not exactly sure about UCLA though, my best bet is yes.
As for CAL I know they have have the biggest Greek system on the west coast I would say that you will probably want some recs but I don't think they are required. What I do know is that CALs greek like if absolutely amazing, the houses that I have been to are so fun and the people are completely down to earth! GO BEARS!

Recs are useful, but not a must for most schools in California EXCEPT USC.

FSU
FSU from what I hear doesn't require rec letters, but they do give points for them.

Um no. You don't go to FSU. You aren't a sosority member. You haven't even gone through recruitment or obtained all the recs you need at your school. Please concentrate on your own life and don't post ridiculous lies about things you know nothing about.

WRONG! if you are rushing at fsu and want to have give yourself the best advantage, you had better have recs!
fsu has as a very competitive recruitment.

recs and alum letters of support contribute to what my house calls "pre-rush score"--(grades, community service, high school involvement contribute too)
Any recruitment where more girls go thru than there will be spots for, is competitive, some places are super competitve. Panhell offices that tell parents that recs "don't matter, don't worry about them" do PNMs a great dis-service
