Another Sorority Merger at Penn State: Theta Pi Alpha to Sigma Sigma Sigma

Local sorority Theta Pi Alpha has merged with the Penn State chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma, according to an article in the January 20 '06 Collegian.

http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive...dsports-05.asp

The article says that 31 the members of Theta Pi Alpha are joining Sigma Sigma Sigma. There's a brief reference to another merger earlier when a different Penn State local merged into Phi Mu.

Interesting development.

Definitely interesting. I remember one of their sisters being on GC... don't remember the username. I do remember that they very much wanted to bring Theta Phi Alpha on campus. I'm sorry that that dream didn't work out, but happy that they can find their home in another NPC group!

The only reason Title IX got brought up is because the local groups were calling themselves "service" sororities to get around having to be part of Panhel and follow the Panhel rules. They're not getting rid of them because they are local, they're getting rid of them because the way they're operating is unfair to the rest of the Greek community.

The article noted that 6 groups had been cited with not being in line with Title IX - what are the other 4 groups doing?

Wow. This is good for our chapter there. They are an awesome chapter, but are one of the smaller groups at PSU (much like Phi Mu was before their merger).

Lightbulb

Kind of Mind Boggleing. But what has Title IX have to do with this out side of the sports venue for what it was originally set up for?

It did not specify in its constitution that male members were welcome to join, it was in violation of gender discrimination codes.

Director of Union and Student Activities Stan Latta said that Title IX protects against gender discrimination in organizations.
