Donations?

I just wrote out my donation check to the DU Educational Foundation. I have donated since I graduated from Texas in 1988. When I started I sent in $25 or so per year, now that I can, I usually send in $100-200 dollars a year.
I am curious as to other Greekchat members opinions with regards to the followig :do you believe your donation is benficial to your organization, your attitude toward donations IE: to whom do you donate, your local chapter or national organization( I have done both, but I tend to send more to the National Org, Do you get any "extra newsletter or recognition for your donation, how much do you donate, etc?
As an aside my wife donates to her University ,Vanderbilt, but has not donated to ADPI. I won't donate to my University or Law School till I finish paying off my law school loans sigh $57,000 left eleven years after graduation from law school but thats for another forum thread.

I donate to my organization and my chapter, but not my university. Since my donations are not able to be very large yet, I'm not sure if they are beneficial, or not.

I donate to the Alpha Phi Foundation, but not to the organization in general. I also don't donate to my local chapter. I figure I do enough by being an advisor. But I pay my dues to international and locally, and I think that's good enough since I've only been out of school for two years. Maybe when I'm older and have more money I can donate more.

I pay my alum dues on the local and national level and donate to the Alpha Phi Foundation - which supports cardiac care for women and infants.

Even if you can send $20 its important. Go without going out to dinner with friends one night or don't buy those shoes that are just going to hurt your feet anyways! It will add up! (not to mention donations to the Foundation are a tax deduction!)

Even small donations help! Here's 2 ways to look @ it.

#1 That $50 you send in every year helps cover small expenses for traveling consultants, like meals for on the road an entire week.

#2 That $50 probably gets added to an account that draws interest, meaning that your donation grows from the initial amount you donated.

Some people will donate small amounts when they can their entire life- that adds up over 50 or 60 years!

Some people will wait until their more financially solvent and donate one lump sum. Which often helps out in an immediate situation. (Sometimes they will be people no one has heard of for 30+ years. And then, there's this big check!)


I personally donate small amounts nationally when I can. My alum chapter is beginning to work closely with our local collegiates, so I don't donate $$ to them. (They're actually pretty well off anyway, lol). If I ever become super-rich, then I'll definately donate a larger sum to them

I won't donate to my university until I pay off my loans, either. Although I'd like to think that when I do (about 6 more years) I'll donate occassionally.

Finincial responsibility is part of being a member of any organization. The Kappa Sigma endowment fund has a special donating area for undergraduate students: The McCormick circle. Any undergraduate student that donates $18.69 or more becomes a member of this special circle and recieves a pin. For any chapter that donates $5,000, a matching gift is provided for that chapter specifically.

If you donate $1,000 or more to the fraternity, you become "One of Jackson's men," a very special privelage

I donate $25 per year to the Kappa Delta Foundation. My chapter has been closed, there for I don't donate to them. Also, I volunteer as a chapter advisor for a chapter nearby. I rationalize only giving $25 per year on the basis of being a single mom who volunteers with the chapter-and paying a babysitter when I have meetings. Hopefully, when I'm a little better off. I'll be able to donate more.

I believe it is very important to donate to your national organization. Even if it is just $20 your contributions add up over time as do those of all the members cumulatively.

I pay my international and local alumnae dues and contribute to our foundation. If you are a recent grad (within the first 5 years) and donate $20 or $25 or more you receive an ivy leaf pin from the foundation.

We also have different donor circles and an 1872 recognition for women who have given $1872.

I'm still an undergrad, and I work for my school's Development Office, so I understand how important alumni donations are. I've already donated to my university (class gift) and will continue to donate; likewise, I will pay my alumnae dues and support my fraternity by volunteering as an advisor and donating to the KKG Foundation every year upon my graduation.

I've learned at work that it really is not the amount of the donation that matters (though I've never met an organization that won't take as much money as you want to give them). The sheer fact that you're donating is what counts, because foundations are often evaluated on the basis of their donor participation. Most universities consider themselves fortunate if 50% of alumni give. I have no idea what the numbers are like for fraternities.

Many of The Brothers of My Chapter Have Donated to My International. I wish they cared so much about the Active Chapter.

I have to a certain Degree. We are in the process of trying to build a new Chapter House after tearing 2 houses down. This is where I send my meager $$$ to rebuild my Chapter as We Do not and Will not depend on any help from HDQ! I know it cost a lot of money to keep Internationl running and I have feelings to donate to them!

But, where do my/your rememberances lay?



I have made out a will with Two Brothers running it and tells where the money goes. While as a small business person, I do not have much now, I am in hopes that I will have some money of several figures to give to them.

Remember this, the Organizion You Belong to has made more of a significant design on you total life than anything else. If not for your Greek Org. what would you be???

Sorry this is long but you will see why in the 2nd paragraph...

The most important thing for all of us to remember is that it is the totality of all GLO alums/undergrads donating -- sending the $10 - 50 or whatever amount (volunteer, clothing donations etc.) is multiplied times thousands of alums/undergrads collectively. So keep on sending what every you can when you can afford to do it. If $$ is an object, volunteering your time to your GLO or nonprofit is just as good or even better than sending the check...

Our service organization is a little different than NPC GLOs since we are a non-academic service sorority we do not have the traditional undergrad & alumna chapters but the bottom line is the same HELPING OTHERS [see link below].

Every chapter sends a specified amount to Headquarters which support BSP's 17 endowment funds; to name a few: (2) 4 St. Judes, Lupus, Alzheimer's, Cystic Fibrosis, Crohn's/Colitis, Nat'l Child Abuse, Dana-Farber Cancer Inst, Braille bks 4 kids, Marrow Donor Prog, Research 4 MS, and others for sick kids and adults (from our March Torch) & 38 national scholarships, Disasater fund, "emergency-loans" to members in addition to the donations we make to local / regional group. Our Northern California Council (NCC- covers about 10 counties and 15 City Councils) supports the Lupus Foundation, Stanford Kidney research foundations (National supports this group too), breast cancer org - Susan G Colman plus another group. This past year we collecitvely raised about $15k which to very worthy causes.

We have 13 chapters in our Sacramento City Council (SCC) that receives a set amount from each chapter $$ goes towards 4 non-profits and the Mabel Soslow scholarship fund (I rec'd one $400 for next yr). Plus we donate to NCC. Every March we have our annual crab feed; we decide which organization(s) recieves the $$$. This year the money was divided between to non-profit org's. SCC donates about $2000 - 2500 per year to non-profits and to NCC - I know that this $$ is making big differences in many lives

At the chapter level, members donate what they can to the "kitty" every meeting for the four local / regional groups that we support / sponsor; we sponsor at the 4 levels "a non-profit of our choice, SCC, NCC, and HQ

I donate to AOII nationally and I'm the chapter adviser for my chapter. I figure my time is worth more than money for my chapter! I also donate to my university, but usually only 100 dollars a year, I cannot do more than that!

I donate to the Kappa Delta Foundation because I know where the money is going, and I approve.

I do not donate to my college because I am wary of giving them my money and letting them do as they please.

Once I am able to donate a substantial portion of money to my college (crossing fingers), I will dicate to them what the money is to be used for.

I have made some donations to the Sigma Tau Gamma Foundation whenever I have a chance, But I haven't in the last two + years. I'm planning to do it this summer.

I donate to the Phi Mu Foundation. Only about $25 or so per year but I've been out of school less than 2 years and that's about all I can afford right now. I look at it this way....small donations over time DO add up to make a difference. Think about if every alum donated just $10 or $20 per year. That would add up to be a substantial amount of money for that organization. I think that many people don't donate because they don't think their $20 matters, but it really does. (sorry for the mini soapbox!)

Also with Phi Mu you are recognized for certain levels of cumulative gifts. Your name is published in the Aglaia (our magazine) and their may be a dangle or charm for this as well.
