where to find packing peanuts...for free?

my fraternity is planning a winter/"avalanche" party. we'll have snow machines, an ice luge, and we were hoping to fill the common room with tons of packing peanuts to look like snow fell. has anyone done anything like this with peanuts, and knows where to get lots, maybe for free? our common room is about 40 ft x 30 ft, so i think the amount of packing peanuts it takes would cost a fortune if we had to buy them....

thanks!

Check with the campus mail room. I think that's where Sigma Nu, at my school, got their's for the annual Ski Party back in the day.

Not to be a downer, but you might investigate whether or not you will pass a fire inspection. If it would, check out the local malls-especially the Christmas tree ornament shops and anyone who sells breakables.

I would also check with other fraternities, that is what we used for one of our parties. They were kind enough to give us the packing peanuts for free.

Cool warning

We had a Heaven and Hell party and used packing peanuts to fill a floor and make it look like you were standing on clouds. terrible idea. Even though it wasn't the party floor people still had wet shoes or brought drinks to that floor and the peanuts got a little wet. wet packing peanuts are a NIGHTMARE, they stuck to the linoleum floor for awhile, and to this day there are still some stuck to the carpeted stairs that we cannot get off.

We were very lucky to run into a brothers friend who's dad happened to have a TON of packing peanuts because he had some book business or hobby or something where he had a lot of things shipped to him. we also got a bag from a local store that had things shipped to it. check local stores and run around for awhile because yes, packing peanuts are expensive for the volume you need. and you will need more than you think, the peanuts quickly become pushed aside or crushed and flattened as people walk though it.

good luck!
