Hmmm...not sure what to do about this?

Ok my FB feed is blowing up this morning with the picture of a guy who robbed (at gunpoint) another young man in a parking lot over the weekend in Houston. Understanding this could be a hoax, I don't want to post it here, but in the pic, the supposed "perp" is wearing a VERY identifiable piece of AXiD clothing. Chapter and if I'm reading right, date specific also. Any thoughts on what I should do? It's very possible the guy picked up this piece of clothing at a thrift shop, but I guess it could have been his daughters also...

Heading into a meeting and might not respond right away...

Phone the police and let them know all those funny symbols have a meaning and what school it's from. If he did get it at a thrift shop, they might be able to find him that way.

Yeah, I figured they have sent the photo to HPD, and they can figure that part of it out. I meant more (what to do) for the crappy PR that AXiD is getting that they didn't ask for...which I guess is ultimately nothing...I just felt bad about it.

Honestly, I don't think your organization is getting crappy PR. That's taking it a bit far IMO.

For all you know, the suspect stole the clothing!

Regardless, this will blow over (see the Streisand effect for my rationale). I wouldn't give it any more attention.

ETA: if you really want to do something, this is a good opportunity to remind actives/alumnae about correct disposal of items that have identifiable information (e.g. cut the letters off the shirt before you throw it in the bag for donation. It can be sold as "rags").

I agree. I live in Houston and I can't find anything about this. I wouldn't worry too much.

Fair enough! FWIW - not an AXiD - just trying to help.

And good to hear amillionlights - I don't live there but have a ton of friends that do.

Back in 2006, a photo was posted on the thread about seeing your letters in odd places. It showed two American contractors in Iraq, along with an Iraqi man wearing a head scarf and and Alpha Delta Pi sweatshirt. The following is the letter attached to the photo:

"I have attached a little humor for you from Iraq. It's actually what
spawned my inquiry into the old chapter. One of my responsibilities out here with the Iraqi battalion is overseeing construction projects in support of the unit. I am having a fort built for one of my Iraqi companies and have a local construction contractor working for me. I was out at the construction site a couple weeks ago and saw one of the workers wearing an odd article of clothing that looked familiar. I called him over (which is a task when no translator is handy) and saw that he was wearing a sorority sweatshirt!! I about lost it. I yelled for my translator, then made him explain the sweatshirt and its meaning to the worker. Needless to say, he was not pleased to be wearing a "girl shirt". I explained that it meant he was part of a club (easier to explain club than "sorority") of a LOT of beautiful women, knowing first hand since I dated a few in my day, but he was still not pleased. So please, pass this on to the appropriate sorority sisters you know, and tell them that their rush efforts in Iraq are seriously slipping. This isn't the caliber I remember of their sorority at ASU. It might even be worth posting in the IFC office for all to enjoy.

I hope to talk to you again and see you at one of the events this fall.

ITB,
Joe Moye

Sometimes, your letters show up in strange places, and you have to roll with the punches. Frankly, I found it hysterical, but I do have a warped sense of humor.

^^^ Oh sorry - I assumed facts not in evidence, shirley1929! My bad. Pretty sure Alpha Xi doesn't have anything to worry about, though. Way worse crazy stuff going on now than some idiot in a sorority shirt. Thankful he hasn't killed anyone that we know of, right?

ETA: I'm with you, honeychile. I find stuff funny that others see no humor in - oh well. Too bad, so sad. I was actually going to suggest that this get posted in the "finding your letters" thread. Now I wish I had! I'm pretty sure AZ-Alpha Xi would forgive me (or she wouldn't give me a ride to our Alumnae Panhellenic meeting Wednesday night if she was mad at me).

If it was a female perp then I might be concerned. But remember, all those symbols mean a lot to us but diddly squat to most of the world.

Ok...I'm over it then! After the 6th time this dude was on my feed this AM, I had the nagging sense I needed to do something.

Moving on and hoping his sorry self gets caught soon! (last I heard he'd robbed at least 2 in the Costco parking lot over the weekend)
