U North Texas: Lambda Chi Alpha connect with elderly

Fraternity members connect with Denton's elderly

ANGELA DEANER

As part of a five-step plan to enhance the fraternity's image, members of NT's Lambda Chi Alpha chapter spent time with residents at Carriage House Assisted Living Facility Thursday. Carriage House is located off of Bernard St. just south of campus.

Participants helped residents work on scrapbooks and provided them with company.

Council delegate for Lambda Chi, the fraternity is planning on making the visits a regular event. "We've been here twice before, with about 20 brothers," he said. "From now on we'd like to come here two or three times each semester." In doing so, the brothers hope to develop a relationship with the residents.

"One person is assigned to each resident. We want them to be on a one-to-one basis, so they can get to know each other," Alexander said. "They should know their resident's name and their background. They should also share a little about themselves as well."

Lambda Chi, in addition to working with Carriage House, plans on working with a local children's home as well, Alexander said.

"We're trying to reach out to our community in every way possible," he said. "We're doing what we can to rise to the top."

Mike Hughes, Carrollton junior and president of Lambda Chi, said the fraternity has been focusing on ways to serve Denton. "Our community service efforts are something we're always trying to improve. We've done some work cleaning trash up around the city," he said. "Now we're trying to do something new, and working with Carriage House is allowing the brothers to do something different."
