Johnson & Wales, Rhode Island

My younger sister will probably be going to the Rhode Island campus of Johnson & Wales next fall.

Does anyone know anything about the greek system, and how rush is like there? All I can find is a list of what sororitest hey have up there. I'm excited, because there is an SDT chapter

GLO's:

fraternities
Alpha Phi Alpha
Delta Sigma Phi
Kappa Alpha Psi
Phi Beta Sigma
Phi Kappa Sigma
Sigma Lambda Beta
Sigma Pi
Tau Epsilon Phi
Tau Kappa Epsilon
Zeta Beta Tau

sororities
Alpha Sigma Tau
Delta Phi Epsilon
Delta Sigma Theta
Phi Sigma Sigma
Sigma Delta Tau
Sigma Gamma Rho
Sigma Lambda Gamma
Sigma Lambda Upsilon
Sigma Sigma Sigma

How do I convice her that she should at least give rush a try? I want her to go through it even if she doesn't end up joining.

Also, a suggestion was made to me not to go visit the SDT chatper when we go to visist, so if she does go through rush they form thier own opinion on her. Any advice on that, beccause I would like to meet some of my sisters from there when we go visit.

Thanxs

I suggest you just talk up greek life to her the best way you know how. Encourage her to keep an open mind. She could very well be thinking that if she rushes, she HAS to go SDT. Be sure she knows that it's important to find the best place for her. And as far as the visit, if you go, I wouldn't bring her. Depending on how close that is to recruitment, it may be an infraction for them to talk to her if she decides to go through. Even if it isn't, it may make her feel like she is expected to be an SDT, when she really wants to see for herself.

Their Greek Advisor is a really great lady too, so definitely have her talk to your sister. I met her at NGLA last year. She's very positive about ALL of the chapters at J&W.

Also, show your sister what a great experience you're having in sorority life...whether it be through photos or inviting her to a sisterhood, etc. Being witness is the best PR

I would be more then happy to discuss the Greek Community with you at Johnson & Wales. Their website hasn't been updated in forever. Last year the school added a new fraternity. (Sigma Alpha Mu) of which I am a member.

I graduated last May and and now working for the National Office of Sigma Alpha Mu. I would be more then happy to answer any of your questions about the school and/or the Greek System.

Email me at jameso@sam.org or you can find me on AIM at ols74.

Hope to hear from you soon.

She has seen it, but she has also seen some of the drama, which has turned her off big time I think

Of course there will be drama, but there's going to be drama in ANY organization, Greek or not...even organizations where there SHOULDN'T be!

Hopefully your sister will be able to look past that and see the wonderful opportunities, as well.

My boyfriend's cousin is an alumna of Delta Phi Epsilon at Johnson & Wales. She was a Tourism major and now works at the Marriott in Manhattan.

She's always told me how much she loved being in a sorority there. Hopefully your cousin will at least give rush a shot and try it before she dismisses it completely.
