A few questions

Hello, I am a member of Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, Inc. As you may know, our sign is the number 7 in ASL. I was just wondering what your reasons are for using the same sign. Also, what is your call. I've seen two different ones...its that the case? I dont like to be make assumptions because Im confused. Can anyone help me out here?

I am going to attempt to answer this from what I have learned as my chapter of GSS isn't super "into" the calls/hand signs but the call is Wee-oop and the sign I think from googling is the same as y'alls because it is supposed to look like the "Wee-oop" (it makes a W and an O) but someone who has been in the organization longer/is a member of chapter that does use these things MAY be able to answer you better!

Gamma Sigma Sigma does not have an "official" call or hand sign, although I know that quite a number of individual chapters use them. Many of those chapters are at HBCU and/or in the south. I'm ancient, though, so I can only go from what I see in photos appearing in our publication and on individual chapter websites.

I know nothing about where "Wee-oop" came from. Perhaps someone from a chapter that uses a call sign can help there.

As for the hand sign that chapters use being the "same" as used in Sigma Gamma Rho, I'm guessing because it's supposed to represent a Sigma, versus the number seven in sign language. But I don't know that for a fact because A. my chapter didn't use hand signs and B. I don't pretend to know anything about Sigma Gamma Rho.

I was told by my pledge mom that that particular hand sign represents Wee-oop, although I have no idea where wee-oop came from.

As someone from a chapter that uses the call/hand sign...the call has bit of a story behind it. But as it's the hand sign in question, I don't think there's an official answer since our signs aren't officially sanctioned by GSS. There are actually two signs, the one we are discussing, and another using the thumb and pointer fingers.

Although I am not in Sigma Gamma Rho, two of my GSS line sisters are (in fact, all four D9 orgs are represented on my line). When the issue came up on our yard they dismissed it, saying you can find old pics of their alumnae from the 40s and 50s throwing up pinkies (which we know it unofficially associated with AKA) so we shouldn't worry about it.

Are the NPHC handsigns actually official? (As in, if someone were nuts enough to want to change the KAY handsign would they have to do so as a proposal to the National Convention?)

I'm almost certain that SGRho is the only NPHC org which has an official hand sign.

However, I will say that it seems as though most of the national orgs are more comfortable using the unofficial hand signs in their official publications and social media presences. I suppose they went from being "undignified" in the minds of some of the leaders to being okay because the generation that created the signs are now in charge
