UNC Charlotte Chapter Status?
In Charlotte on vacation.
One of my vacation rituals is to try to find LXA chapters in whatever town I end up in.
Found the UNCC Chapter house. Empty keg in front yard, dozens (upon dozens) of beer bottles visible inside the house - but no one home.
UNCC's website stated that the chapter was declared inactive by the GHZ in 5/04. Does anyone have more information on what happened? Letters are still on the house, etc.
From what I can see, of the other "greek" houses I saw (Chi Phi, and Pi Kappa Phi) - LXA looked like the only habitable house I could find...the other were unbelievable DUMPS, even by Animal House standards.
Just curious...will check in later when I get home.

At a time when fraternities need to promote themselves and put forth a good image, it doesn't seem that they are doing anything like that.
On the other hand, it IS summer. Maybe these houses were not left in the best of hands?

The house at UNCC was kicked off campus. There was a memo sent out by IHQ in April about their closing. I don't remember many of the details, but there was a party, guys got wasted, and they decided to go fight another fraternity. Well, they went to the fight with shovels and other weapons.
I don't know how it got started, and even as I understand it, the other fraternity didn't get punished, but we got kicked off campus. One university official said "I don't want to see Lambda Chi Alpha on this campus as long as I'm here"
So thats what I know, if you contact IHQ, I'm sure they'd be happy to tell the whole story.

Surprising
Wow, that is a shocker. I met some brothers from there last summer in Chapel Hill they were really nice guys and knew a lot about the fraternity. This demonstrates three brothers do not make up the whole fraternity. I have heard from various people they were a good chapter one of the strongest in North Carolina, obviously some things have changed and they deserved the punishment that was given to them.
With no chapter at Duke, NC State and for the meantime Charlotte University {just changed their name} we do not have a presence at three big schools in North Carolina, all three of those schools had strong chapters in the past.
As to the greek scene at Charlotte it is bad, not many people go greek and the university doesn't really care about greeks, a lot like UNC-Wilmington. When the all greek average is a 2.5 something is obviously wrong with the individuals that make up the fraternities there and when the greek officials give awards to fraternities like Lambda Chi for academic excellence with a 2.4-2.5 average that is absurd. There are only four sororites there and they do not have more than 80 people, there are more fraternities than sororites which I also find odd for a school over 15,000 people. Lambda Chi Alpha was the second biggest fraternity there but like I said winning awards like "best social life" and "academic acheivement" with an average of 2.5 in the fall are not great things, so it could say something about what happened to this chapter and shows what their priorities were. I hate losing chapters and it sucks they got busted, hopefully they can work things out and come back and have a better presence in the future.

Being a former UNCC student, LXA was removed this year by HQ. Yes, all the info posted about the fight is true. Infact, the LXA fought the Chi Phi's. I believe the Chi Phis were put on social probabtion as a result of this. Apparently, Lambda Chi Alpha was hosting its annual Mardi Gras party(or maybe another party), people started leaving due to boredom or other reasons and headed across the street to Chi Phi. Hence, Lambda Chi Alpha came with shovels and other tools and a fight broke out. That is what I heard from many of my male friends who are in fraternities. I did not know any Lambda Chi's personally so I cannot verify it. As for the state of the Chi Phi and Pi Kappa Phi Houses, they usually look better during the school year...I know members from both houses and basically in the summertime things are a bit laxed.

What happened to the NC-State chapter? i thought they were still there.
Its ashame that the brothers at UNCC were shut down, hopefully in a couple of years we will return start anew and return to the great chapter we have all heard it was.

NC State lost their chapter around 10 years ago due to lack of membership and so forth. This chapter has been brought up a lot with expansion talks. This would be a waste because this schools greek life is horrible for 25,000 students, the houses are crap and the fraternities are really small, only like 13% of the students go greek. I can verify this because my brother is a Kappa Sig there and my cousin is an SAE and i've learned a lot about the greek scene and the state of fraternities there. Interesting fact John Tesh was a brother of the Lambda Chi chapter at NCSU.
One school I would really like to see a chapter at is Duke, even though Greek life isn't huge at Duke because it is such a small school, a lot of the students go greek and Lambda Chi used to be very good there leaving the school because of changes in the membership requirements thirty-forty years ago.
Even though we lack chapters at Duke, NC State and Charlotte we do have a lot of good chapters in North Carolina. I have gone to four of them and have friends from high school in a few of them. East Carolina, App. St, Elon, North Carolina are very good chapters and have really cool brothers, if you are ever in the state of NC you should stop by because all those campuses are in cool places like Boone in the mtns. Chapel Hill which is beautiful and Greenville which is a HUGE party school, some of you old timers might not be able to hang there.

What a damn shame.
Just checked UNC web site and the zeta web site is still up running.
Frm the looks of it, they had nice house building!
It also showed dates of 4-04 for functions. When were they dechartered?

ECU is doing great. The house is looking better than ever with a new year of actives working extensivly to make it a better place. We are increasing our numbers each semester and we are planning to have an incredible rush in the fall. By our standards, incredible is around 12 or more guys. We are hoping to get that. We have been pulling in about 7 members on average each year.

It was only two brothers that got in the fight and messed up everything for the whole chapter. Everything is still in the works on the punishment from HQ.

Roshomon
In the classic Kurosawa Movie Roshomon their is a crime that takes place that has many different interpretations from different witnesses. I can only wonder If this incident has many different "takes" on it as well.

I was at that house in 1996 I think. It was really an incredible place, brnad new and as I recall, very large. I also remember it being almost too nice to be a fraternity house, until I realized that the parties went on outside since it was warm all year long there, so you could have a nice inside of the house, yada yada yada.
The only advice that I can give you for rush is to just work hard at it every day, keep good records of who is hanging around the house and coming to parties, get more than just the delta to be active in doing it, and keep following up with all of the people that are coming out (rushees). This may seem overly simple, but it will do the trick.
Also if rush doesnt go as well as you want it too, I suggest the following: gather around the AM's that you get and challenge them to each bring out a friend they know during the first week of association and work with them to organize three rushes during the first week of association with another quick bid session at the end. What I have found is that the brothers may have exhaused what they may know in terms of rush prospects, and the newest members may have untapped insights. Also getting new people involved with recruitment right off the bat is a good future lesson.
Tell them that it is important to help the chapter by doing this, and you may find a super enthusiastic group of ambassadors for your fraternity who will want to help out, and present it as a "challenge for the newest members of the fraternity" 18 year olds seem to really respond to this kind of in your face stuff.
Or, even if you have a good rush, do this anyway, maybe you need the help. I remember BY had like 110 actives back in 1996 too.
Hope this helps, simple advice= good advice!

Josh good to hear things got straightened out and the zeta is alive. Just because you can't through a party in the house doesn't mean you dont have any options. Remember i think a 1/3 of our chapters dont have houses. You just need to think of rush as a 24x7 job. ANYTHING can be a rush event.....let me repeat that....ANYTHING can be a rush event. start eating in the dinning hall once or twice a week and call up some rushees to join you. my chapter has started to play dodgeball evey wednesday night oncampus in one of the tennis courts. also they have brotherhood dinner once a week, we dont have a house so everyone comes to one the oncampus apartments chips in $3-$5 for all you can eat pusta. just call guys up to come out and hang out to get to know you. hey three or four brothers are going to a movie want to come? you can reserve a lecture hall one night and have a greek movie marathon(animal house, revenge of the nerds, etc) and have a rush table for information.
I remember talking to a guy from UCLA one summer at conclave and they had a great rush gymmic. they would sell raffle tickets at the rush table all week and then that friday they would draw the winner. the catch was you had to come back to the house for the drawing. they gave away a surf board but i always wanted to get the ravens to sign a football and raffle that off and have the money go to charity(two birds with one stone on that one.) anyway before the drawing they would play pool have stuff to eat maybe some card games going, basically mini events within the main event designed to get to know guys and get them interested incoming out more.
also since you can't through parties in the house just invite guys to go club hopping with you. or go on a road trip and bring some along. remember the dumbest reason to join a fraternity is to party, this is college there are parties everywhere, you dont need to be greek to find some beer. you need to show guys the million other things about being in a fraternity they have no idea about.
if your having trouble with making the house payment why dont you just rent rooms to boarders, i know when i was in college, i would go down to the chpater at maryland and they did that and ended up rushing several of those guys.
just a thought, hope you can use some of these suggestions and i hope you guys have a good semester. keep posting and let us know how things are going and if you need anything else.
