Things I Learned Over Christmas

My family is still nuts

You should not try to put contacts in when your fingers are numb

My Grandma can kick my ass at Chinese checkers

I can kick anyone in my family's ass at Disney trivia

My father shouldn't have asked my uncle's girlfriend how old she is

You shouldn't greet people at church with "What are YOU doing here?"

Grandmas still don't know how to buy clothes for the grandkids

Lilo and Stitch is actually pretty funny

7 inches of snow is just too much

The dog got more toys than I did

in my case it should read: "my dad will always win trivial pursuit, no matter how far he may be behind at any given point"

That punch is liquid crack to children..

Your oldest sister will always be trying to win affection of the parents no matter what..

People do try to hard to make a family get-together too perfect...

Children can get into locked doors...

That ignorant bro-in-laws and oldest sisters should not ask your boyfriend (who you've been with over a year..) "What's your name again??"

No matter what, 5 minutes is all is takes for 6 children to unwrap presents that took hours to wrap...

I kick ass when it comes to mall parking.

Keep receipts handy because you never know when you're going to need them.

Drunken dodgeball is cool.

One should not mix Uncle JD and Bud Light at football tailgates.

Lilo and Stitch is one of the best movies, I just got it for christmas!

You're little brother and sister aren't so little anymore.

It really, really, really SUCKS to be the only single one in the family...especially when you're 12 and 13 brother and sister both have "boyfriends and girlfriends"

Family is still annoying, no matter how much you missed them while you were at school

Sometimes you just need to step back and look at everything....

Nothing, not even snow, can stop Christmas at my house.

Hot chocolate and "It's a Wonderful Life" make Christmas Eve.

One present will be lost in the shuffle.

I am not Martha Stewart. But I'm close.

Sometimes, one little thing with thought put into it means more than the biggest gestures.

All family grows exponentially in insanity with the amount of alcohol consumed and Disney movies watched.

Only serve white wine with a white table cloth and lots of guests.

Things I learned ....

It is nice to have lots and lots of family (I don't, but I went home with one of my bro's: he has LOTS of people in his family). Maybe I should have like, 15 kids or something.

People will stare at you wherever you go when you go to small town in the middle of Iowa (Jesup, IA is like, population of 200).

Do NOT make strawberry decker with pineapple juice.

Eating non-stop for four days without any excercise is not good for you.

Bring your Italian dictionary with you if you're gathering with an Italian family (that would HELP a lot).

Going to Catholic Church at Christmas Eve is a perfect night for Christmas.

Deer sticks are good.

Do NOT give the ICEE Machine to little kids (what a mess!)

Iowa is COLD (especially if you don't have central heating).

edited-One thing I DID think of don't let your relatives bring their dog if your kitchen isn't dog proof! If they bring it anyway, keep the food up REALLY high!

Never underestimate the power of a clean house to make your mother extremely happy with you.

Just ignore your teenage sister when she starts to scream. She'll be quiet eventually.

My family is very thoughtful.

Sharing "family time" with your fiancee's family is necessary and doesn't always turn out to be horrible.

We're all growing up.

All the girls I grew up with now look like their mothers.

My dad likes saying "TMI" things to me (I think it's his revenge for when he had to pick up "feminine supplies" for me & my mom).

My boyfriend's mom thinks I am petite and super skinny.

Taking a wrong turn and driving up Mount Davis in the middle of a snowstorm is v.v. bad.

Country boys with plows on their pickup trucks and chains and shovels are cool.

Regardless of how much money someone spends on that amazing *insert useless gift here*, it's really the thoughtful gifts we remember the most.

It feels really good to make your kid sister happy with lots of new clothes.

My dad always makes good dinner.

That regardless of how much attention some people get, they still want it all at the dinner table.

On a little more serious note, I learned that some of my family (who live in the South) and are my age are very closeminded and almost dare I say prejudiced about people of other cultures or who are different then they are. I had not noticed it until this holiday.

Things I Learned this year...

Working til seven 'o clock on Christmas Eve sucks.

That some of my cousins are losing brain capacity even as I write this.

That watching my adorable little godchild Quinn open up his dump truck and stuffed monkey were the best Christmas gifts I got this year.
