What part of South Carolina? Does your family want to be near the beach, mountains, historical sites, universities/colleges, etc.?

We need a little bit for info for our answers, lol.

Wow, pretty broad question. To answer your question....

The weather is most definately better than Michigan, bad winter weather is pretty much unheard of and the summers are hot and humid. The question really is which part are you going to be in. The are three major areas mountains/upstate which is more progressive, the midlands, and the coast. As far as schools, the public school system sucks and is like last in the nation, but the colleges are on point. In relation to jobs and the best places to live, I would say Charleston, Columbia, or Greenville. I would avoid the northern coastal areas (Myrtle Beach and the Pee Dee) like the plague because the job market there is horrible unless you are in the tourism industry. Last but not least, the Greek life is southern just like the culture....

If your mom is scared of hurricanes, then Charleston is not the place to move! Since your parents likes fishing, Lake Murray is great for fishing and boating. It's outside of Columbia. Three of the towns that border it are Lexington, Irmo, and Chapin. You would be near USC--there is a DZ chapter there. In fact, the DZs are building a house next door to the Kappas!

South Carolina is a wonderful place to live. The people are so friendly, and it's a beautiful state. If y'all move to Columbia, you would be about three hours from the mountains or the beach.

Happy hunting!!!

I am glad I kept reading, because I was going to post the exact same thing!!! Charleston usually gets hit pretty hard during hurricaine season! I second what MsKKG suggested!

Wink It's not a Palm Tree!

It's a Palmetto as in The Palmetto State...not to be confused with pimento which is a spread put on bread which I dread!!!

Charleston is awesome!! I wouldn't worry TOO much about hurricanes - every one that looks like it's going to hit us ends up hitting Wilmington, NC - so don't move there!! Charleston, though, has almost no job market, is expensive to live there, and the traffic in the suburbs is atrocious!! CofC is a great school, as well as the Citadel and Trident Tech. But public schools are terrible - I could run the Chas County school board better than the people on it now. A lot of kids go to private high schools. But the city itself is gorgeous, a great vacation spot. GREAT night life, cool historical things to do, great shopping.

I grew up in Columbia. The Midlands are a rapidly growing area. The public schools are actually really good in some parts of town. Football season is definitely fun!! (Go Cocks!) The weather is nice, but if you're from Michigan, you and your family will be miserable your first summer there. It'll take your body some time to get used to the heat. But, hey, that's what a/c is for. Downtown Columbia is alright. I wouldn't exactly say it's a big party or even very pretty, but it's easy to navigate (unlike downtown Charleston where the streets are dangerously narrow). There is a lot to do culturally in Columbia, and it's a nice place to raise a family. As far as hurricanes, they can and DO come to Columbia - Tropical Storm Chris in the mid-1980s and Hurricane Hugo in 1989. The only difference is that maybe some trees will fall down in your yard, as opposed to being on the coast and loosing your whole house! As far as fishing goes, Lake Murray is one of the nation's premiere bass lakes. Lake Marion is pretty good (it's halfway between Columbia and the coast) and there are several good lakes in the Upstate (I date a guy who's into fishing, can you tell?).

I agree with staying the hell away from the Grand Strand. Once you're out of the Myrtle Beach area, you are in the boon docks. The locals are - well, scary. And during the summer, it's so overrun by tourists that you'll want to go on vacation, too - to somewhere far away from Myrtle Beach!!

The Upstate is another place with good public schools, and it is expanding in many industries. Business prospects and job markest are good all along the I-85 corridor between Charlotte and Atlanta.

Happy hunting! SC is an awesome place to live!! Let us know what your family decides.

Well as far as Myrtle Beach goes, it is pretty much for senior citizens (North Myrtle Beach) and families with young children. In the past, a lot of people used to come here for spring break, but not so much anymore because it is usually pouring rain like right now. On the other hand, MB has more shopping and restaurants than any other coastal area in SC.

Actually, a friend and I went last year to Myrtle on Spring Break and rented through MyrtleBeachTours.com The house wasn't wonderful, but it was ok...and there were some awesome parties.

MB has great parties depending on where you stay and what time of year you go. Like in my high school, everyone left straight from graduation for First Week (AKA Senior Week) at MB. The year I went, it ended up everyone got houses in North MB, so we just party-hopped from house to house. The club scene is pretty good there. And then, of course, there's the OUTLET MALL!! WOO HOO!!!
