I will propose The Hotel Wolcott (on W31st and 5th i believe.) It's not *really* out of the way, but that depends on where you're headed. It's not too bad of a walk from Times Square/the Theater District, but if you're headed any farther than that it might be kind of a trek! But honestly, I was just there last weekend and it's a really nice walk if you go up 5th avenue. Even around midnight/1am it's not seedy. I'd recommend it to my grandmother, really.
The rooms are pretty nice sized and well equiped, and were very clean and tidy. The lobby is kind of gaudy looking with mirrors and faux marble and gold but it was cute...My one gripe is that the elevators are S-L-O-W and
tiny! But overall- a good experience. The price is VERY VERY reasonable. Check out their website (my computer's being dumb and won't load anything except GC and AIM so I can't search myself)
Have fun in NYC. One of my fav. places!
