Indiana University Suspends Fraternity Activity

And now IU follows U of Michigan. The IFC voted to suspend all activities. This is an interesting proactive trend.

"(*****), student body president at IU, said he was proud of the decision, which will suspend activities until the middle of spring."

Suspended until the middle of spring? Indiana does their main recruitment in the Spring semester. I'm not sure when IFC takes place (at the same time as NPC or later), but it would appear to an outsider that IFC recruitment is affected by this decision.

It's reactive and it's bullshit. If these IFC members think it's so useful to suspend themselves, why don't they simply come clean with what is happening in their own chapters? This activity makes zero sense.

If your chapter isn't doing anything that could get you in trouble, why would you agree to this? I'd be like why don't you idiots who are acting like fools suspend yourself, but my chapter is going to keep doing what we do, because it's right.

Exactly. One would have to guess that the admin came to them and told them to shut themselves down or the school would withdraw recognition. I would have liked to see a display of a little more backbone. It will be interesting to see what systems are put into place which will justify the fraternity system being shut down at these schools for a couple of months.

The women's groups can't shut down, because girls already have flights booked to go back to school early and all that horseshit. On a side note, a lot of fraternities pair with sororities during the week of bid day to celebrate their new members. Guess that's out now.

The next thing is going to be people asking the chapters and the nationals for return of their dues.

As far as I know from my on campus sources, the sororities are not affected by this "voluntary suspension" other than socially. Fraternities will not be having social events, therefore sorority women will not be going to parties. Panhellenic did not participate in this vote.

Is there a running list of campuses that have banned or suspended Greek activities? Either by mandate or voluntarily by the councils? I am just wondering because it seems as though this has been happening all over the place lately, more than usual and it's always making the news.
