NPC - Beekman Tower 75th Anniversary
Has anybody heard anymore details about this. Found it on npc's website.
from NPC's ph factor newsletter:
http://www.npcwomen.org/college/pdf/...actor_Fall.pdf
The National Panhellenic Conference is planning a celebration open to all members April 22-23, 2005 at the Beekman Tower Hotel in New York City. NPC will present a plaque to the hotel to commemorate its 75thanniversary. In 1921, the 3,000-member New York Chapter of the Panhellenic Association decided to erect a clubhouse to provide permanent and temporary living accommodations for sorority women looking to enter the workforce. The Panhellenic Association raised $1,600,000 by selling bonds to the members. Philanthropist Emily Easton Hepburn invested in the Panhellenic Association in 1926 and became the majority stockholder in the project. She selected 3 Mitchell Place at First Avenue and East 49thStreet as the site for the new building. Originally purchased in her own name, Ms. Hepburn turned the property over tothe Panhellenic Association in 1928. The hotel was opened as the Panhellenic Tower and the Greek alphabet was carved into bricks near the entrance to the hotel. The cornerstone contained a listing and history of the Panhellenic Association fraternities. The Panhellenic Tower was a headquarters for the New York City club and was used for initiations, banquets, dances and meetings. The building was designated a landmark by the Landmark Commission because it was an excellent example of Art Deco architecture and because it was built by women for women. The building was sold to the founder of Affinia Hospitality in1964, renamed as the Beekman Tower and transformed into an all-suite property. Affinia is a collection of luxury and business hotels throughout New York City. A special “Sisters in the City” package is open to all Panhellenic members from mid-June through August 31, 2005. Reservations can be made by calling 1-866-AFFINIA or online at www.affinia.com.

At Convention last summer, we had a flyer included with our materials regarding this celebration.
The flyer included the history of the tower and hotel, and until December 14th of this year, rates start at $229 per night. The package includes spacious suite accomodations, a daily continental breakfast, a "welcome" cocktail at the Top of the Tower, and complimentary hospitality suite for groups booking a minimum of ten rooms.
Aside from the plaque presentation in May 2005, I don't think they're going to have any more celebration plans.
I'd love to go, but $229 a night is just too much for me.

Thanks for posting this. If you get anymore information about upcoming events, please let me know. I would love to participate.
I had no idea about the history of Beekman Towers despite the fact that I am a few blocks from there. If NPC still owned that building, they would be rich since real estate in this neighborhood is so expensive. It would be the biggest sorority house in the country.

Yes, Chi Omega announced this at our National Convention this summer too.
*Notice the fleur-de-lis on the front of the building -- so cool.

There was a whole chapter on this in one of the Tri Delta history books I read -- I thought it was really interesting. I would have loved to stay there back in the day.

It's nice. It's near the United Nations. I go by it sometimes since it's a few blocks away from me.

I didn't get the email until the day before the meeting so I didn't attend. I plan to attend future meetings since I am now officially on the email list.
I found some more information about the Beekman Tower Hotel. http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/html/des...nic_print.html

We talked about the Beekman tower event at the meeting. The weekend is definitely happening (we'll just ignore how bad the day before passover is for scheduling an event like this in NYC.) and they are thinking of having happy hour/cocktails on friday and a brunch on saturday. i don't know how definite any of those details are though. It's being organized by NPC nationally but they asked for feedback from NYC Panhel. If I hear anything more I'll let everyone now.

Sierra and P-N-C:
We (NYC Chi O alum chapter) had been getting info from NYC Panhel for a while, but it seems to have stopped. I also sent an email to who I thought was the president a while ago and heard nothing back. If you want to PM some contact info that would be great.
Thanks!
Kathy
