Question Members of BGLO's being vindictive to potential members?!?

I have a friend that was really intereted in becoming a member of a specific BGLO. She attended the rush and in her horror realized that one of the members of the particular chapter was the ex-girlfriend of her recent boyfriend. My friend, let's call her Jane Doe, has come in contact with the member (who we'll call Mary) on a few occasions prior to the rush and Mary has given her nothing but the cold shoulder despite Jane's attempt to be cordial. Mary did not take the breakup with the guy well. Although Jane felt she had what it takes to TRY and go through with the process of becoming a member, she decided to not go through with it because she felt Mary would undoubtedly get her ruled out as a potential candidate. (I hear there's a voting process involved.) I knew how bad she wanted it and could not believe that Mary could have that type of power to have her "black listed". Does this type of thing actually go on as far as a member holding a grudge against a potential member? I do not know much about BGLOs or their processes so if any of my wording is inappropriate please excuse me.

Speaking from personal experience, I had the same thing happen to me. The president of the chapter at my school was best friends with my fiance's(now ex husband's) ex-girlfriend (who was also a member). I was always on pins and needles around her and she also seemed to give me the "cold shoulder", Can you say PARANOID?? Well, anyway, I finally got a chance to sit down and talk with his ex-girlfriend and she was the coolest person...even after we split up, she was very supportive. So, I guess, the moral of the story is that a good person wouldn't deny you membership based on who you are dating. And anyway, that's kind of childish. Hope I helped, God Bless!

Also, One vote is just that, one vote. I've seen it happen that someone couldn't get her sister on a line because he majority didn't want her, and I've also seen it happen that the president's nay vote was outnumbered and her mortal enemy got on. But you'll never know that unless you have the courage of your convictions and apply regardless of how you think others will react.

Red face

i've seen that scenario played out so many times when i was in school. i really think that it depends on the chapter. if they are real tight or feel that their sister was wronged then the person seeking membership is sol. but if they are not so tight and/or someone stands up and says ok,i know you don't like her but she demonstrates good character and leadership skills and i think that she will be an asset----then maybe. i have had alot of people say i don't like such and such, we just come to gether in the name of the sorority to do community work & thats it. i think that it takes a big person to put aside their personal diffreences and look at the bigger picture and not many WOMEN are able to do that.
