Careers Of Our Alpha Gams
This alot of people have graduated and people are looking for jobs, I thought it might be fun for people to post what field/profession they are working in and or the one they want to be in and what their college major was. It could be like our own message board version of Rosevines. Here are the Q's...
- College Major?
- Current Career/Profession?
- Description Of It?
- Dream/Goal Career (If its not your current)?
- Future Career (for those still in college)?
- Name some jobs you have held in the past?
Of course you dont have to answer all of them. . Ill start (duh!)
College Major: Sociology with a concentration in Pre-Law
Current Career/Profession: Sociotherpist/Youth and Family Development Specialist
Description I pretty much watch and record the progress of children who have been taken out of their homes for various reasons ranging from sexual abuse to physical violence. This is definately not a job for the very senstive unfortunately
Goal Career: To become a family law attorney with a sports law practice/agent on the side, if that doesnt work something in Public Policy or teaching.
Past Jobs: I have had so many. I've worked at the Gap (actually 2 retail stores), as a Hostess/Barista/Bus Girl/Server, Ice Cream parlor (you really do get sick of ice cream ), Library assistant, telemarketer, swim instructor (still do some lessons) and bagel girl and office assistant.

Current Career/Profession: I dont know if I would call this my career but I currently work as a Communications Officer or an Emergency Dispatcher, which ever you prefer.
Description of Job: I take 911 or emergency calls for help from the public and try to help them over the phone and send help in hte form of police, medical, or fire officers. Also, not something for the very sensitive at times!
Dream/Goal Career: To become an Oral Surgeon one of these days!
Jobs held in the past: Hmmm, where to begin...Dental Assistant, oral surgeon assistant, Emergency Medical Tech-Basic, Dispatcher, and of cource waitress, McDonalds manager (the best way to get you to not eat fast food!), and a hostess.
I didnt ever finish my degree BUT am planning on going back...hopefully

College Major: BA Human Development/Sociology, MA (almost done) Cross Cultural Education
Current Career/Profession: Elementary Teacher and Full Time student
Description Of It: I think it is pretty self explainatory (?) but I am substitute teaching at this time.
Dream/Goal Career (If its not your current): To teach full time in my own classroom. If I am lucky enough to pursue another career (after children, etc), I would like to spend my time as a child advocate.
Name some jobs you have held in the past: Waitress (many years), Disneyland (merchandise), AGD IHQ, Technical Recruiter and a teacher. WOW! Lots of positions...
Oh...and I must not forget my other job now. I work part time at Bath and Body Works right now.
That's it!

Good idea! :)
College Major: BA in Biology and English
Current Career/Profession: Abstractor/Indexer
Description Basically, I select articles from medical journals that have to do with malfunctioning or misused medical devices, and then I write abstracts for the articles. I also gather information on medical device recalls and write up reports of the recalls for a weekly publication. It's interesting to see what can go wrong with medical procedures, but it makes you never ever want to go to the hospital.
Goal Career: I am going to go back to school to get a master's in biomedical writing. I am going to take a class in the fall to make sure I like the program, and then I'll apply for formal admission in either the spring or the summer. After that, I would like to work in medical or scientific publishing.
Past Jobs: I was an elementary school reading tutor and a biology TA in college and I worked at a housewares store during the summer. I also worked at a credit card company for a summer (I highly recommend that people work at a credit card company at some point in their life because it teaches you how to use them properly!).

Major: World Business and Language w/ concentration in Marketing.
Current Profession: I work at the Information Desk at Briarwood Mall. Stop by if you're in Ann Arbor and say hi. Recently I met an Alum from somewhere in Ohio. She was so cute. At least 50 years old. My job is only part-time since my full time jobs are school and AGD. But I make people happy at the mall and make sure that they know where they're going.
Dream Career: Well this might take a while. There's quit a few things that I want to do in the future. First I would love to run my own airport. I also think it would be cool to work for IHQ sometime, but I'm not sure what I'd be able to do for them. I also want to work in France at some point too. So if there's anyway that I can do all three of those at the same time tell me.
Past Jobs: Let's see. I worked at Abercrombie & Fitch for about a year during school and last summer. When I came back the management had turned over and I didn't like them that much. Before that I worked at Showcase Cinemas in Grand Rapids. Loved that a lot. Did all sorts of stuff for that place. I've worked for a couple of teacher's stores. Which made me think for a while that I wanted to go into education, but decided that I wouldn't be able to handle the kids for that long.
I think those were all the questions. I hope.

College: B.A. in Communication Studies, B.S. in Journalism with an emphasis in Advertising.
Current Career (for the next 3 days): I am in sports marketing. I've been working for my firm for two years. Prior to that I worked at an advertising agency. I am in account service. I consider my background in Sponsorships/Sports, Advertising/Marketing and PR.
In three days, I am beginning my most wonderful chapters in my life. After much soul searching and a crappy economy...I've decided to go back to school to pursue my Master's in Higher Education with an emphasis in Student Affairs. I begin my Graduate Assistantship in Greek Life in a week and a half.
I'm so excited to be able to give back. And, this has to be one of the best careers in the world. Can you imagine being able to work with college students everyday. It's going to be so much fun. They are so energetic and excited about everything. Of course, there will be the not-so-fun things like Alochol and Substance abuse, hazing, self-image issues, eating disorders, rape, and depression. But, I hope to be able to help them through it.
Past jobs: Well you name it...Radio News Anchor, Waitress, Library Assistant, Media Relations, The Gap, Williams-Sonoma, Pier One.
LiEP,
Keri

Current Career/Profession? Reservationist for Hawaiian Airlines
Description Of It? Nothing glamorous about the job itself... I work in a call center making, changing, and cancelling reservations... answering dumb questions... taking verbal abuse from irates... If not for the lovely benefits... I wouldn't subject myself to such torture.
Dream/Goal Career (If its not your current)? To be retired.... however, I'd love to write professionally... I plan to return to school for the MLIS program.
Name some jobs you have held in the past? 3 years working for an ocean sports center in Waikiki renting surfboards, air mats, and that sort of stuff, 8 years working for a dive company, and 2 years working for a ground handling company selling tours... my entire work history is made up of jobs in the Hawaii tourism industry.

College: Double Major in Communications and Political Science with an emphasis on the American Political System and a minor in Psychology with an emphasis on Social Psychology
Current: I am a campaign manager for a State Representative race in Jackson County, MI (I am soon leaving it however, see past post regarding it, and no she still hasn't paid me!!) I am also trying to get a job with another campaign or the Democratic Coordinated Campaign (not for anyone specific, just for Michigan Democrats). I also am a fundraiser for the University of Michigan (Be nice when we call, Tonya!! ) Unpaid I am the President of the College Democrats of Michigan, Vice-President to the Michigan Democratic Party Youth Caucus and a member of the Youth Coordinated Campaign Committee
Descriptions: As campaign manager I run basically EVERYTHING that happens in a campaign. In larger campaigns I would be in charge of a Field Director, Fundraiser, Volunteer Coordinator, Grass Roots organizer, etc... but because this campaign is so small, between me and the other campaign manager we do all of those jobs. Which means I have to do the fundraising and the volunteer organizing and the plans for candidate events, I also have to be in charge of contacting the media and other little things like that. I am also the spokesperson for the campaign.
As a UofM Fundraiser, I call alumni and ask for financial support. As CDM President I am in charge of the CDM executive board and also of starting new chapters and helping older ones. Basically I make things run as smoothly as possible. As Youth Caucus VP, I am in charge of helping all youth in Michigan become more acquainted and hopefully involved with the Democrats. As a member of the Youth Coordinated Campaign committee I, along with other members are getting together a plan for the fall to get more youth registered and voting and get more youth involved in politics.
Dream/Goal
Well short term hopefully I'll Graduate just in time to work on the 2004 Presidential election. After that I hope to work at first in Lansing with the Democrats in any of their administrative offices or as a Legislative Aide to a State Representative or State Senator. From there I want to go to Washington DC more than anything and work in a Capitol Hill office, with a lobbying firm, with the Democratic National Committee. I also want to run a major campaign one year (Greeklawgirl, mabye I can work for you!!! ), then go back to lobbying or simply be a Political Analyst for the party or a campaign. My big dream is to basically have a job where I have to spend a lot of time in the White House one way or another
Past Jobs
Oh Geez what haven't I done? I worked @ 2 pizza places, a hostess at 3 restaurants, a waitress at one, a knife salesman, at Osh Kosh B'gosh and a bead store and my most rewarding job was working as a Pre-Kindergarten/Summer Camp teacher for 2 years where I learned so much about myself and about being a kid!!!!
