I'm confused if she was actually initiated into the fraternity or was just made a sweetheart. Either way, it's pretty cool.

Umm... It says she was the Sweetheart of the Fraternity, which is different that a member - but still entailing privilages within the Fraternity... or at least thats how many Fraternities used to do it in the past.

hoosier: Thanks for posting this. I actually had (still have) this site bookmarked.

I believe that Life Magazine took some liberties by stating Miss Garland was "initiated" as a member. And to be clear, she was elected the Sweetheart for the Alpha Gamma chapter (Ohio State) and not the whole Fraternity.

I don't know if there was anything "official" in place at the time, but given that she was 14 years old, and not a student at Ohio State, my guess is that this may have been an honorary title. Which many chapters have bestowed on other worthy ladies as well.
