redfox, ever see drumline? stepping is what they are doing at the party where you can see our letters. it's rhythmic clapping and stamping thing (hopefully if you havent seen drumline, some one explains it better than me.)

with stepping, i would encourage you to do it, if it is going to make the chapter more close knit, then do it. plus do you come from an area where the greeks on campus have step competitions? that is a good way to promote inter-chapter activities with greeks at your university.

stepping orignates in the african-american culture. you see alot of sorities like AKA, ZETA PHI BETA, AND DELTA step, just to name a few. I wouldn't mind stepping too, but my chapter wouldn't understand the concept of it. but hey if you decide to do it tell me how it goes and maybe keep me posted. i'll step with ya in spirit!

Kappa Xi steps and strolls.....and we have a blast doing it. It is a good way to show your spirit and get recognized on the yard as well as in the Music Dept.

On our campus its something the greeks do at a Fraternity/Sorority or school party, usually, if not always, GDIs and very few greeks are in the middle of the dance floor dancing to whatever the DJ is playing, around them the greeks are strolling/stepping, and around them are the greek gawkers (usually the wanna bees.) watching us step/stroll. I was one of those greeks that couldn't catch the beat, because everthing has to be done at the same time. If it's done right and there isn't anyone off beat like me in the line , it will look like one person with several moving parts. It's really cool looking. I had to watch rather then look like a fool. That's pretty much it.

The Iota Pi chapter strolls at recruitment events sometimes. Though personally I always feel a little awkward doing it. For a musician, I sure don't have rhythm.
