Quite a Quote! (U. of Virginia)

The Cavalier Daily for August 24 '05 has a story about the (former) Beta Theta Pi chapter. Beta Theta Pi removed the chapter's charter this summer.

The, ahem, fun quote in the article is attributed to an officer of the former chapter and is a complaint about Beta:

"They want us to be a model fraternity with the best, gentlemanly guys with the most class and the least amount of drinking."

He went on to say, "It's almost like taking away what fraternities are about . . . ."

My personal comments: 1) Oh my. 2) Interfraternal best wishes to Beta Theta Pi.

Dumb thing to say.

Unfortunately, it probably reflects the beliefs of the guy -- and generally the chapter as well.

I just brought this up with my neighbors - who are both UVa grads (and Greek but neither are Betas) - and they felt the article was a tad overblown. I'm not sure what they mean by 'overblown' and unfortunately, I didn't have time to delve further.
