Sigma Chi Headquarters has released a letter from our Grand Consul (Grand President), explaining the reasons for supporting the chapter in separating from the campus IFC. The letter goes into some depth explaining how, after allegations of conduct in 2016, Sigma Chi HQ worked with the WVU administration to implement new policies in the chapter, held a membership review and removed members not living up to fraternal policies, and had made strides in changing the chapter culture; only to have WVU come back 2 years later with new punishments for the actions that had happened in 2016.
The description that brings clemsongirl mirth, "A College in Morgantown, WV", has its origins in the late 80s/early 90s. At that time, Sigma Chi's Omicron chapter at Dickinson College(PA) had gotten into trouble. Our HQ did not think that the behavior warranted closure, even after Dickinson rescinded recognition. In our fraternity magazine and other official documents, the chapter was listed as 'Omicron at Dickinson College*' with an explanation of "Although Omicron is not recognized by Dickinson College, it is a fully operational chapter and recognized by the Sigma Chi Internationl Fraternity". After a few years, Dickinson College told the fraternity to stop using their name in our documents. At that time, HQ came up with the designation "A College in Carlisle, PA".
This term has been used by Sigma Chi since then, and is used when our Executive Committee feels that actions by the chapter do not warrant closure but the parent university has rescinded recognition. We currently have chapters at:
*A College in Long Beach, CA.
*A College in Storrs, CT.
*A College in Chico, CA.
Hey, it works for us.
