Regionals

Hi!

In 1953 the SUNY system outlawed national GLOs due to racist practices, leaving the peculiar situation w/ many colleges in the state of New York with many GLOs that are "local" but have many chapters across the state that are loosely affiliated with each other. Some chapters still exist, some died out, some affiliated w/ NPC groups after the ban was lifted, some changed their names etc...

I really want to put together a directory of these "regionals", active chapters, dead chapters, chapters that changed affiliations, etc but I need a lot of your help! Please let me know of any Im missing as well!

A bunch of Clio chapters joined ASA...

SUNY Buffalo became the Pi Pi chapter of ASA.
SUNY Cortland became the Gamma Clio chapter of ASA
SUNY Oneonta became the Beta Xi Chapter of ASA

These all went back to Clio after the ban on nationals.

SUNY Oswego became the Beta Tau chapter of ASA and did not go back to Clio, but turned into a local called Alpha Sigma Chi.

Pi Pi recolonized I believe in the 1970s and closed in around 1992-94.

It appears that the remaining chapters of both Alpha Kappa Phi (Agonian) and Sigma Gamma Phi (Arethusa) have re-affiliated with each other and/or have some alumnae board oversight.

Have the 2 remaining Phi Kappa Pi (Clionian) chapters re-affiliated with each other?
-SUNY Geneseo (Alpha Clio) (Active)
-SUNY Potsdam (Kappa Clio) (Active)

Or have the 3 remaining Alpha Delta re-affiliated with each other.
-SUNY Geneseo (Epsilon) (Active)
-SUNY Potsdam (Kappa) (Active)
-SUNY Oswego (Eta) (Active)

Thanks for the information. I always wanted to know more about those groups. I don't think they ever made it into Baird's. I've only read the really early editions, so I could be wrong.

I have a question for any of you ladies... how is Clionian pronounced? Is is cl-eye-onian or cl-ee-onian? sorry, tough to type it....
FYI, the ASA Pi Pi chapter closed in 1995.

I believe it is with an "eye" sound. While at Convention this summer, I met some SKs from SUNY Geneseo (which I was really excited to talk about the Regional chapters there) and I said Clio with an "ee" sound like the name, and I was corrected. Any Clios correct me if I am wrong.

"SUNY Oswego became the Beta Tau chapter of ASA and did not go back to Clio, but turned into a local called Alpha Sigma Chi.

I clicked on the Alpha Sigma Chi link -- it gives the history of the chapter and ends with a creed that's taken word-for-word from ASA's. Isn't that infringing on copyright? (Or, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"?) And the coat of arms/crest looks very similar.

"Faces Change, but Traditions Stay the Same"

Sounds like they wanted to keep the traditions that were stripped from them by the ban and no thought to reaffiliate with ASA when they could.

I can't imagine what I would do if suddenly I was told that I could no longer be an AOII as a collegian. I'd probably change one letter and keep everything else the same, too!

Before my chapter became Alpha Xi Delta, we were a local called Alpha Sigma Chi as well! ASC for "Always Sisters in Charity" ...

It's been that way for a long long time (and that site has been around for a long time). They even use the ASA nickname. If Alpha Sigma Alpha wanted to sue them, it would have happened by now. Why they haven't reaffiliated, is for someone more knowledgeable than me to answer.
