Sigma Chi Chooses Huntsman Cancer Institute as Second Charity Partner

EVANSTON, IL—At the Sigma Chi 150th celebration, it was announced that the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) has been chosen as one of the Fraternity's preferred charitable organizations in addition to Children's Miracle Network. In an emotional ceremony, Jon M. Huntsman Sr., Pennsylvania 1959, a cancer survivor himself, accepted a $500,000 check from Sigma Chi to benefit HCI.
This year alone, about 563,700 Americans are expected to die of cancer - more than 1,500 people a day. In an effort to cure this epidemic, Huntsman founded HCI to focus on understanding cancer from its very beginnings and to translate this knowledge to safer and more effective treatments.
“It is the goal of the Huntsman Cancer Institute to become a symbol of hope and optimism. We want those carrying the burden of cancer to feel strengthened and hopeful,” explained Huntsman.
HCI was chosen because many Sigs and their families have been directly affected by cancer, the second leading cause of death in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, men have an approximate lifetime risk of 1 in 2 developing the disease; for women, the risk is 1 in 3.
Huntsman has already given over $225 million towards cancer research and now challenges his brothers to aid in his efforts.
“In our fraternal life, we are remembered by our graciousness to others, our charity and kindness to others. Nothing builds character more than reaching out and helping those who can't help themselves. Two hundred thousand [brothers] can change the world,” remarked Huntsman.
He has generously committed to donate $1 to the Sigma Chi Foundation for every $1 raised for HCI through undergraduate chapter philanthropy.
Sigma Chi is one of the largest collegiate fraternities with undergraduate chapters at more than 200 colleges and universities and more than 200,000 alumni members. Sigma Chi provides a welcoming environment for young men of different temperaments, talents and convictions to enjoy a unique lifelong bond that extends far beyond college. Through world-class leadership training, extensive mentoring programs and a strong focus on academic achievement, Sigma Chi sets itself apart as the preeminent collegiate leadership development organization, challenging its members to live by its core values and exemplify Character-in-Action™ in every aspect of their lives, and the lives of others.
