Getting to Know Your PNM

I have heard some girls from BIG greek systems talk about knowing everything they can about PNM's before they come through Formal Recruitment. I have a few questions about that. First of all how do you memorize the information of women who sign up for Formal recruitment at the last minute? i know that on my campus we get a majority of our women at the last minute and I was just wondering exactly how that worked. I have also heard the some sororities put up the picutres and information of PNM's on the walls around the house to memorize the info. Do you really do that? Does it help? What if a PNM is out of line or has to be in a different group for one round (for some random reason), what do you do? Has that ever happened? Did people call a few girls by the wonrg name all night? I am just really interested in how this works at the bigger campuses.
Thanks,
brenda

Nametags are your friend

So are Recruitment apps!

For the same reasons you listed, we don't bother memorizing PNM's. Most of them are last minute, absent, out of order, etc. so it would be pointless.

The only PNMs we're familiar with before rush are legacies, girls with recs, and maybe girls who are friends with actives/alumnae.

We only had about 130 PNM's this fall so it was relatively easy to learn girls names once recruitment started though. To help with memory, we spend alot of time in our workshops doing memorization ice breakers, and going over some ways to help you remember girls better.

Jesus...memorizing?

We don't even have questionaires. When you sign up for recruitment, you just fill out your SMC box, name, Phone Num, and you're asked if you're a legacy. Then they divide the girls into Rho Chi Groups . When each rho chi group comes to the houses and the sisters give out nametags...I suppose they try to memorize the girls they want by rho chi group and name.

Let's all remember that recruitment is a different experience in different places. What may be the norm on one campus on in a geographical region may be totally different elsewhere. There's a huge difference between 5-6 sororities and 120 girls going through and 15 sororities and 2000 girls going through.

I went to A&M, and the greek system there is somewhat large I suppose, so maybe I can help explain a little bit. We have 11 sororities and while I was there, rush numbers ranged from 600 to 1000.

There is an application deadline for the PNMs, and those who register at the last minute sometimes just don't get all of their stuff memorized by everyone.

The PNMs send in their high school or college transcripts, plus an information page, and a picture. We do put up pics of PNMs around the house, so that people learn who they are. We also go through the list of PNMs as a chapter during spirit week. It of course is IMPOSSIBLE for everyone to learn every single girl, but you get a really good idea. I was amazed how quickly people can learn names when they hear them over and over again for a week. Three years later, I could still hear a name and remember that the person went through rush.

Before the parties start, everyone in the chapter is matched up with a PNM who is in that party. The girls find out who they are picking up at the door, and they line up in that order (Alphabetically). The list is double checked just before the party starts, and if someone is missing or changed parties, then the girl who is supposed to pick her up inside is taken out of line.

The girls also wear nametags, so it is actually less common than you would expect for people to get out of line.

The time that it gets confusing is when a girl sends in a pic where she has long blonde hair, but shows up for recruitment with short browna hair. Haha. It's always a good idea to send in a pic that is close to what you ACTUALLY look like.

Whew, sorry for the long post. I hope that helps give you a better idea.

I went to Texas Tech....There are 10 sororities and usually about 700-800 PNM's going through recruitment.

We do pretty much the same thing as Lindz928 said. I was actually Rush Info. Chair my Sr. Year. This meant that I had to scan all of the PNM's pics in the computer and enter all kinds of pertinent information. The girls info, including their pics were printed onto 1/2 a sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper. These info sheets were then placed on a small envelope. Prior to each party we all lined up in the specified order and we received the card which designated which PNM we were going to be picking up at the door. The envelopes provide our girls w/info to speak to the rushee about (i.e., activities they were involved in, major, etc.). Prior to the PNMs coming in, the envelopes were picked up.

We handle legacies, friends of alum/actives, etc the way others have described.

When I rushed back in 1993, we had little "calling cards," so to speak, that we filled out for the first round of rush. We had 22 of them, one for each house, and it had our name on them, maybe where we were from or other basic info (I don't remember exactly) and a picture. When we would go to each house, we'd give a card to the first sister we talked to. I am assuming that's what they used to remember us by.

The recruitment counselors have girls fill these out here too. That's exactly what they're for and they really do help.

Now THAT is a sharp idea!! Not only does it help remember who's who, but I can see it helping the actives relax because they have some ideas on what to talk about.
