ipod as a gift for signif other...?

soooo i was thinkin about getting my bf an ipod. he's one of those completely-obsessed-with-music types (saw 5 concerts this summer, buys cds on a regular basis, has thousands of songs on his comp at school, even collects records, etc) and i think he'd love it. plus, he's on varsity bball and travels a lot (this way he could take all of his music w/ him instead of picking a few cds to take)

however, an ipod is a very expensive gift... i was thinkin about combining our 2 year anniv, his 21st bday, and xmas

i have a very good job this summer (interning in a law firm) and i've also made some $$ from other random things (babysitting, working a few weeks at my old job, ebaying, etc) so i could afford to buy this..

also, they just dropped the price on ipods (yippee!!!)

new prices (4G model):

20gb ipod = $269 + tax (free ship)
40gb ipod + dock (incl) = $369 + tax (free ship)

they also come w/ free engraving on the back of up to 2 lines if you order it online

i'm not sure which to get.. although i'm leaning toward the 40gb (i heard the dock is really useful, and its $35 separately, and doubling the memory for $100 -- or $65 if i'm counting the dock -- is pretty good...) this way he'd never have to worry about running out of space and... hehe.. he could put some of my music on it too anyway, im pretty sure if i got him the 20gb he'd exchange it and upgrade to the 40..

so here are my q's:

1. which ipod would you get? do you think ~$400 is wayyy too much for a gift considering we're college students even if its combined for 3 pretty big events? if you were a guy would this freak you out or would you be really happy?

2. would you even want an ipod?

3. i was thinking about having something engraved on the back... nothing like "OOOH POOKEY I LOVE YOU LOTS AND LOTS MWAHHHH LOVE, BINKYBEAR!" but just a short word that has a lot of significance for us, and maybe the date we started dating

what are your thoughts on that? good/bad?

ok everyone, lets get some advice

oh, also: his bro just bought himself an ipod w/ his hs graduation $$ (he got a 20gb back when the 20's were $369 but included a dock) and my bf was talkin about how great ipods are etc but that theyre pretty expensive... im sure hed end up buying himself one or getting one for his 21st bday though

Go for it, sister! You're coming up on two years of being together? You think he's worth it? (you obviously do ) then I think it would probably be the kind of gift that would mean a lot to him because of his musical interests...if you can comfortably afford it, I would do it. Definitely get it engraved as well, that makes it priceless

DEFINITELY check out the student discount. You can do it through apple.com and then compare with local ipod retailers.

I think it'd be great. I've always been a fan of useful gifts over romantic ones.

I believe what I got my gf after two years was a blender (a very nice blender)

I have a Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra.

40 GB's- $250 bucks.

Way cheaper than an I-Pod. It works like a charm, I love it.

I got my boyfriend a $230 dollar gift for our 8 month because that was when he became my longest relationship.

Considering how long the two of you have been dating, and how big of a music fan he is, go for it, I'm sure he'll love it.

My boyfriend gave me an iPod for Christmas. It was a very nice gift. He bought the 40 gig iPod for himself and lost it in a taxi cab. He's still kicking himself over that. He recommends the 20 g just in case people lose it like he did.

If he wants it it's a great gift. I agree with ktsnake, I'd always rather get a gift that I want and can really use.

Since it's not a very romantic gift by nature, more of a "Woh! Awesome!" gift, you could get it engraved...but I wouldn't get very sappy. May the date you started dating on the back small and discrete with your initials...

Or his name written nicely since it's a gift for him.

I don't know, be creative, just remember an ipod is something he'll probably be carrying in public places and you don't want to be so romantic that it's too much so as to embaress him.

I don't care if the person was my wife, I hate having things engraved with something from someone else. I had a chick give me stuff that had her name on it as well as mine. What the heck was I supposed to do? Show everyone that? Some girls just don't understand guys at all.
