I am older than college level and I devoured all 4 books! They're terrific!
By the way, in Canada, the first book is titled:
"Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" not
"Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone" .....

Did ya see that in Duval Co., Fl, kids have to have signed permission slips to check out HP books from the school library because one parent said it promoted witchcraft!
It's a book about imagination, geeesh!

Yes, I agree and also that another prevailing theme is that Good can and will triumph over Evil!

Hmmm...I wonder if any of these critics have even read the book?
Call their bluff and ask them if they have read any of the books cover to cover?
By the way, for everyone's interest, here is a list of The 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990–2000
Some of the books include: The Outsiders (by S.E. Hinton), The Catcher in the Rye (by J.D. Salinger), James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl, Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume, and others! And yes, indeed, the Harry Potter series is in there too!

That, too! I hate it when people act like Harry Potter is just for kids....people can really learn a lot from it! I know I sound corny, but its true lol.

J.K Rowling is an amazing storyteller. I started reading my little brother's Harry Potter books over last Christmas Break and I got through one a day. I couldn't put them down! Especially during the Quidditch matches, oh my gosh, I was so nervous for him! That woman is an excellent writer!

Well, I can tell you that the publishers recognize that Adults are reading Harry Potter too, because they made "Adult Covers" for Harry Potter....
The adult cover is here and the kids cover is here
Here is the artwork for the adult cover of The Goblet of Fire and the kids' one
The above might look unfamiliar, since I am showing the British and Canadian covers, not the American ones!
Also, the artwork for Harry Potter in German is kind of interesting too, Book 1 , Book 2 and Book 3 and Book 4
Harry Potter en francais:
Book 1 , Book 2 , Book 3 and Book 4
Harry Potter en espagnol:
Book 1 , Book 2 , Book 3 Book 4
Enjoy! I love the different artwork used for the differing languages and countries!

YAY!! I am SO glad to see this thread, I am a HP JUNKIE!!
HP is my life...I'm a young adult and sometimes children's librarian, complete with requisite Master's degree. Never in my life has there been such a phenomenon in children's publishing. Because of HP. kids are putting down their PlayStations and reading! They're using their imaginations and discovering that maybe reading isn't so bad after all (which is good, 'cause if they didn't like to read, I"d be out of a job). I myself am not a fantasy reader, but Rowling's perfect balance of plot, character, and setting make these books highly accessible to everyone. Most of the characters' names are from mythology and folklore, which makes it all the more interesting for the older reader. The books teach important lessons in life without being preachy (notice that Harry always does what's right and what will benefit the most people, even when tempted by evil), and OOOOHHH I could just go on for HOURS. But I won't.
It's great to see that all of you have given these books a chance. They're really not just for kids.

Harry "Crack" Potter
I love these stories! I picked up the 1st book a few weeks ago, because I wanted to read it before seeing the movie. 2 days later I was out buying the 2cnd book. I'm re-reading the 3rd now, because I went through it so fast I want to make sure I didn't miss anything. And I prefer paperbacks, so I'm waiting for #4 to come out in paperback.
Anyways, when I had started on the 2cnd one, I asked my friend is she had read it yet. After seeing the movie, and me going on about it, she, too has completely devoured the first 3 books. She told her boyfriend she wanted #2 for Xmas. Then she read it, and told him #3, etc. Yesterday I was going to go hang out with her, and she called like 3 1/2 hours later than she was supposed to and said "Too bad I just finished book #3". So now we call it Harry "crack" Potter because we're both so into it. Who can wait to find out what happens next?
So I thought I'd post a couple links for you HP fans:
The WB Movie Site : This site is amazingly interactive. You get sorted into a house, practice Quidditch, get your own wand, design magical creatures, etc. Enjoy!
The Harry Potter Lexicon: All sorts of info on anything HP. Actually, quite an academic site. Word of warning: if you haven't read all of the books, you may get hints at what is to come. So read cautiously.
