Why do chapters close?

I am new to this site so I am sorry if this is already answered somewhere and I just can't find it! I am just curious: in general, why do chapters close and leave a university? I am a new member of the new Sigma Kappa chapter at Clemson, and I saw that we used to have Delta Gamma here? Does anyone know why it left?

There is no "general" answer to this question. Different chapters close for different reasons.

As far as why DG left, perhaps someone can post that info (not sure why it would matter, though).

There are quite a few reasons a chapter could close: numbers, repeated policy violations, risk management issues, debt, inability to fill a chapter housing facility, etc.

Generally speaking, the only people who know the exact specific reasons for a closure are the members and the national staff involved with the chapter.

Unfortunately 10 years ago the Panhellenic community was very different at Clemson then it is today. Alpha Gamma Delta closed in 2000, and Delta Gamma left in 2002, both because of low membership. The campus has done a lot of work (restructuring, new leadership, raising/adjusting total, RFM, etc) to help make campus more "fair" for all chapters. When Delta Zeta came on campus several years ago they did a great job and continue to be successful, and I think Sigma Kappa will also share in their success. It would be great to see if all closed chapters (Pi Phi & Phi Mu also used to be on campus) would one day have an opportunity to return. Enjoy your experience, as a new member.
