UTSA rush
I did a search and couldn't find anything pertaining to this, so does anyone have experience with UTSA recruitment?
My younger sister has decided that's where she wants to go (she's a senior in hs right now)
She sounds like she's finally contemplating the idea of going through recruitment (before she swore she wasn't "the type" to be in a sorority, but we talked and I think she is beginning to realize there is no "type" )
We've been to the Panhellenic website and visited chapter websites (which are all really cute!)
So any info about UTSA recruitment would be really helpful! Like what quota usually is, how "competitive" it is or whatever!

t*p-- contact the office of Greek Life for solid statistics and advice for your sister-- if she calls them up and asks about the Greek Life culture there, typical recruitment week attire, etc., she'll get a good picture of what to expect-- especially if she asks the question, "What is your advice for a high school senior considering attending your university and going through fall formal recruitment as a freshman?" They'll be much more frank in a one-on-one phone call.

You're welcome-- the voyeur in all of us humbly requests that you eavesdrop on the call-- as a big sister should-- and report back the dirt on UTSA, as it seems we haven't yet discussed that school on GC Will your sis be joining us on the GC boards?

UTSA and San Antonio Greek Life
A friend of a friend of mine is an ASA from UTSA and she enjoyed her experience there. They have Fall Formal Recruitment and follow a structure with Open House, 2 Rounds, then Preference. I think most of the NPC groups have been there about 25 years. Phi Mu was the newest in 99. I think chapters are around 50-60 members and New Member classes around 15-25 with all groups taking quota or getting very close.
Last thing I knew Misty Kelley was the Greek Advisor - mkelley@utsa.edu or 210.458.4160 - she would probably send you definitive info. I think they also have a Greek Program Advisor.
Panhellenic Council - http://www.utsa.edu/sa/greeklife/htm/PHC.htm
Greek Life in general is pretty active - http://www.utsa.edu/sa/greeklife/index.htm
UTSA Homecoming Awards - http://www.utsa.edu/homecoming/EventWinners.htm
I think most freshman now live in Chaparral Village, but I am not sure if greeks have suites or housing somewhere on campus or not... http://www.utsa.edu/Students/housing/house.cfm The campus is adding housing to improve campus life and make it more residential, but they are not building any additional housing at the downtown campus in the near future.
San Antonio Alumnae - http://www.panhellenic-sa.org/
Other schools with Greeks in SA - St. Mary's and University of the Incarnate Word. (SATX*APhi can probably give you the scoop)
NPC Groups -
ALPHA OMICRON PI - http://www.aopiutsa.org/
ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA - http://www.asautsa.com/
PHI MU - http://www.geocities.com/phimusorority (temporatily down)
SIGMA KAPPA - http://www.sigmakappautsa.org/
Epsilon Sigma Alpha and Sigma Lambda Alpha are under PHC, but don't participate in formal recruitment. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Kappa Delta Chi are members of the MGC.

UTSA is where I was an undergrad. Unfortunately, I wont have much more information than you already have. (About all I can tell you is how many sororities are there and their history.) Cant really tell you about the style of rush or how frilly it is, because 1) I never went through sorority rush (I did help the girls set up for a few parties) and 2) I dont know how to quantify 'frilly'.
Its a great school that is very rapidly growing. This fall it will be about 28,000 students. The campus is growing and they just opened a new dorm, new admin building, rec center and in the next few months will be opening a new dining hall, a new parking garage and a new biosciences building. They will be starting construction on expanding the university center in the next year. The campus is on a beautifully landscaped site on the edge of the hill country and they are building a new mall across the street from campus (complete with a nordstroms and neiman marcus) so I am sure she will like that if shes the 'shopping' type.
What I can tell you about sorority recruitment is that I wouldnt consider it a super compedative system. Its not cut-throat. They moved formal recruitment for the fall to right before school starts. It used to be the third week of school. I know all groups saw numbers drop because of it, but I dont know how dedicated Panhellenic is to keeping it before school.
On average, two groups ususally do COB in the spring. I couldnt tell you how many go through rush, because the numbers dropped this year due to the schedule change. I checked about a week out this past fall and they had about 80 girls signed up for rush. In the past they have taken apps up until a few days before rush. Historically, there was only a hanful of girls that dropped out of rush and a handful of girls that didnt get bids. In all my time at UTSA, I only know (personally) one girl that didnt get a bid, and that was cause she burned a few bridges with each group...
All four NPC sororities at UTSA are good groups with pretty solid numbers. There are also two NPHC Sororities, and a handful of multicultural sororities.
Hope this helps.

adpiucf- i'll see if we can arrange for a 3-way call since she lives a few hours away so i can get the low-down on UTSA I've told her about this site, and I don't know if she'll join us here, but be certain I will definitely keep you all posted!
txaphi - THANK YOU so much for posting all those links and info! it's so great to have all those all in one place rather than clicking the "back" button on the browser while navigating through their greek site! My sister & I have been talking about the possiblity of greek life for her via instant messenger and browsing the site.. so this def. makes it easy to just cut/paste the different links
lifesaver - thanks so much for the info you posted!

don't know much about their recrutiment system, but I do know misty. She actually got a promotion and is not the GA anymore. i just heard they hired a new GA who is fabulous. it's a great campus. And....ony of my old officers is our rep for the SA Alum Panhellenic. she's really excited about the upcoming "intro to sorority life." my chapter isn't there...but her name is Michelle and i love her to death! i was her chapter advisor for 3 years and she's wonderful!
good luck to your sister!

Thanks Jocelyn I think I am just one of those people who enjoys the mechanics/strategy of recruitment a lot!
t*p - If you still need some first hand insight after talking to the GA, I can put you in touch with my friend's friend who is an ASA there, her name is Kristina.
