Thumbs down Low numbers

Asa doesn't seem to be very big does anyone know why?
Where are all the ASA's maybe if we actually utilized this board we could gain new members bc they could see how cool we are.

Hey Lana, you know you and I together are cooler than all the other sororites combined! hee hee

I know we lost a lot of chapters when we went from being an education sorority to being a member of NPC. A lot of people had double memberships (like you could be a Chi O and an ASA at the same time) and their NPC membership took precedence. They had to give up their ASA membership and needless to say chapter numbers plummeted. The same sort of thing happened to Tri Sigma and Alpha Sigma Tau.

I personally think we need to make a really big effort to get back into large schools like the big 10 and places like that. I know that takes a lot of $$$$ and effort, but you get out of it what you put into it.

I also think that the smaller sororities in the NPC need to band together to help improve our numbers. We would be stronger together than alone.

And as far as utilizing the internet that is something we definitely need to work on as an organization.

(whew, long post)

At my school, ASA is the largest sorority on campus! Of course, I go to a small school where there are only 2 other sororities... but we are still the biggest, and of course the best!

We need recruitment ideas!

My chapter (ET) has had some issues within the sorority in the past year and, although we did get 10 total new members fall and spring semesters, we need to get some ideas for recuritment.

The population of my school is only 2% greek. I would like to get my sorority's numbers up. Any ideas would be so helpful.

If the school’s population is only 2% Greek, it sounds as though you need to work on the Panhellenic issues before tackling the chapter issues.

Are the other groups at total? If no one or only one or two of the groups are at total, Panhel should vote to lower it. Too many schools are still using the same totals that were put into place 10-15 years ago when the system was booming and haven’t changed it to account for changing times. The national headquarters don’t really take that into account, all they see is a chapter not making total and it hurts everyone.

Make sure that the sororities and fraternities are presenting a unified Greek front to the campus. Very few people want to get involved in a Greek system where everyone is trashing everyone else.

If it’s a problem with a commuter campus, make sure that even if you don’t have an official house, you have an unofficial gathering place where sisters know they can find other sisters when they come on campus.

Above all – don’t sacrifice quality for quantity. Giving bids to every Mary, Jane and Sally might get your numbers up temporarily but you will pay dearly for it in the long run. Make sure that the women you choose will fit into the group and are dedicated to being part of ASA, not just joining to wear letters.

My campus is a very big commuter campus. The actual campus is very small. I'm not sure that we have many problems with sororities against each other but I do know that many people do not like the fact that we are not permited to have greek houses. We have had some problems with girls in the past who have not been quality. But we have taken in some quality girls and we are looking forward to taking in more. I am just concerned. One sorority here has 60+ members. So we are looking for quality. Thank you for reminding me of that.

Even if you cannot have official houses on campus, the sisters that do live on can still try & get dorm suites next to each other or something like that. Plus if people live directly off-campus you can still have a bunch of sisters live together - the college can't prevent that. It doesn't matter what you do as long as you have some sort of a base. Believe me sorority houses don't need to be big mansions with columns and huge porches and letters on the front. Our houses were just little family houses made over - nothing at all fancy - and I wouldn't trade them for all the showplaces in the world.

How many members are you at now? You can PM me if you want.

I agree with Sheila about the house and quality thing. The women in the sorority make the sorority not a house. At the moment our colony soon to be chapter doesn't have a house but our sisterhood is awesome and people on our campus join us because they see that so my recommendation to getting numbers up would be (if ya'll don't have it already) work towards a real tight sisterhood so people can be like "hey they may not be allowed to have a house, they are still friendly down to earth people and I want to be part of it." and have COB's if you can. And just put on the best "show" you can and show the potential new members what ASA is all about and why you as well as every other ASA out there is proud to be an ASA. I wish you luck in getting quality women and getting your numbers up. If you need anything else feel free to pm me or something and keep us updated on your adventure for quality women.

As a sorority, we have been working toward strength and we've had some problems with individuals in the past. I am one of 10 that were initiated this year (fall and spring, I was fall) and very very strong, independent women. I am very proud to wear my letters around, and I do.
